Local athletes contribute to Thunder hockey win

Courtesy of a strong second period, the Kenosha Thunder co-op hockey team came away with a 7-4 victory against visiting Brookfield Jan. 22 at the Pleasant Prairie IcePlex.

The co-op team, a Kenosha Unified School District program, includes students from Westosha Central and Wilmot Union high schools.

Following a first period deadlock at 1-1, the Thunder outscored the Brookfield Stars 4-1, sparked by back-to-back goals from Jackson Jones, with the first assisted by Westosha Central’s Chase Erickson and Kyle Kuhfuss, who also assisted in the second goal alongside Joey Trifone.

For Erickson and Kuhfuss, the Westosha Central duo have contributed 12 points to Thunder through Saturday’s contest.

Kuhfuss contributed to the first period goal, assisting Trifone to deadlock the contest at 1-1.

Then, Kenosha’s Nicholas Elsen knocked in a short-handed goal, and later assisted Wilmot Union’s Cody Faber for the Thunder’s fourth goal of the period.

Faber, who is second to Elsen’s 37 points, has eight goals and 12 assists for the season.

In the third period, both teams traded goals, but Wilmot Union’s Dominic Stoller assisted the Thunder’s last goal of the contest when Trifone knocked in an even strength score.

The Thunder improved to 3-2 in the Classic Eight Conference victory, which also kept them above at 10-8 overall.
