Propelled by senior Amanda Sabourin’s 20th career top finish in the discus, the host Westosha Central High Schools girls track team took second in the April 20 Z-Invite, where the Wilmot Union boys team also placed second.

Amanda Sabourin

Beloit Memorial High School won both the boys and girls meets.

Sabourin, who pitched in on two relay teams, attributed footwork as the reason for her success in the discus.

“Footwork is a large component of discus, and can be a distraction while throwing if you’re not comfortable with it,” she said. “A lot of days I would spend spinning without actually throwing a disc. Eventually my footwork became natural enough that I could it with my eyes closed.”

Meanwhile, for the second place Panther boys team, senior Matt Cieslak finished first in two events, the 400-meter dash, where he recorded a personal best 50.46 seconds, and as a member of the 1,600-relay squad.

According to his relay teammate, junior Anthony Poco, Cieslak has demonstrated a strong work ethic.

“Cieslak is one of the hardest workers on our team and is a guy that everyone is trying to keep up with,” said Poco, who ran alongside Zac Schrader and Jordan Jesse in the race. “He put in a lot of time in the previous off-season and know is a major part of the success of our team.”

Kurylo leads personal bests
Senior Austin Kurylo, of Westosha Central, which finished fifth of seven schools, sprinted to two first place personal and season bests at the Z-Invite.

In the 100-meter dash, where he had a personal best, Kurylo (11.30 seconds) edged Zac Schrader, who also had a personal best (11.62).

Kurylo compiled a season best in the 200-meter dash, ahead of Wilmot’s Jordan Jesse (23.49) and Poco (23.64), both of whom had personal bests.

The two top finishes, Kurylo said, are part of a larger mission for his senior season.

“I’m going to attempt to break the 200 and 400 school record and make it to state in two sprinting events,” Kurylo said.

Kurylo, however, was not the only first place finisher.

Junior Joshua Engberg notched a personal best in pole vault at 13-feet, edging senior teammate Jacob Voight (11-0), who finished second, and Panthers’ junior Erik Tucknott (11-0).

Hunter Huggins, a Westosha Central senior, rounded out the Falcons firsts in the discus (149-0).

In distance races, Panthers sophomore Alex Wank took second in the 3,200 run, finishing with a personal best (10:35.80).

Wilmot finished second in two other events, the long jump, where Poco scored a 19-06, and for the triple jump, senior Gunnar Johnson registered a 39-07 1/2.

Scott, Martin pace Panthers
Led by Julissa Scott’s top finish in the high jump, the sixth-place Panther girls received a pair of second place honors from senior Maddie Martin, the 400- and 200-meter dashes.

Additionally, in the pole vault, freshman Nyssa Zuehls (9-06) took first, with sophomore Jessica Zeitler (8-06) picking up third in the event.

Senior Kristen Carlson placed second in the triple jump at 34-03.75, ahead of Westosha Central sophomore Brenna Maloney (31-01), who took third.

Sabourin contributes on two relays
In relay events, Sabourin helped the Falcons finished second in the 1,600-relay and third for the 400-relay.

For the 400-relay, she believes the team consisting of junior Jaden McKenna, sophomore Twila Dovas and senior Kylie Shane, is set to break the school record of 51.64.

“The team came very close to breaking the school record last year with a time of 52.72,” she said. “Kylie Shane, Twila Dovas, and Jaden McKenna are all returners of that team.”

Her other team, the 1,600-relay, had Dovas, Shane and Jaden Morris.

Meanwhile, for senior Madi Hansen, she finished second in the pole vault (9-06).

“Madi Hansen is off to a really strong start in pole vault and it should be an exciting rest of the season to see how far she can go as well,” Sabourin said.

Junior Megan Capra, a distance runner, finished third in 3,200 and played a role on the fourth-place 3,200-relay team, which had Julia Ziemelis, Heaven Anderson and Claire Koeppel.
