No stopping Rockets for homecoming match up

Marengo head coach Matt Lynch is an enthusiast and fun to watch, as he moves with the action of each play, up and down the sideline. Rockets head coach Pat Elder is more reserved by comparison, and lets his charges work the game plan with abandon.

RB woke up in the second quarter, finding themselves down 6-0, and unleashed a running barrage that racked up 344 yards, and walked off with a 38-6 homecoming win.

The Sept. 30 Big Northern Conference East divisional game saw RB (5-1 Overall, BNC East 2-0) continue their march to defend last year’s title.

The vaunted Rockets defense also proved too much for the Indians (3-3, 0-2) by sacking quarterback Trae Hoske three separate times, and holding running back Cody Baumann  to 61 yards.

RB rusher Adam Kinsella (155 yards on 11 carries, 3 TD’s) netted the first two scores on 24- and 1- yard runs. Mike Marzahl split the uprights for a 36-yard field goal with time expired in the first half, giving RB a 17-6 lead.

It took two minutes of play for RB’s Jake Gravedoni (11-86, 1 TD) to cross the goal line to start the third quarter, trailed by Kinsella with a spectacular broken-field 35-yard scramble into the end zone.

Two minutes into the final frame, Trace Von Breunchenhein found a hole on another dive for a 6-yard Td, that closed the scoring and a 38-6 gap over the Indians.

Rockets notes: RB plays at home Oct. 7 against the Genoa-Kingston Cogs (1-5)…Kicker Mike Marzahl was perfect on the night, with 5 PAT conversions, and a field goal.

Johnsburg’s Skyhawks pulled out all the stops in trying to bring home its first victory of the season including a frantic drive to tie the game in the final minutes of regulation. An inability to convert several PAT conversions on the night, and those lacking points, ultimately resulted in a 27-26 overtime loss to the Hampshire Whip-Purs.

The Sept. 30 divisional matchup started out with JB (0-6 Overall, 0-4 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division) firing on all cylinders, as DeStephano pounded the ball around end for an 18-yard touchdown, and quarterback Jon Torgerson following blockers into the end zone for a 15-yard ramble, and a 14-0 advantage.

JB controlled the ball with time of possession and scored on their first two drives, but found the going rough until four minutes remained on the clock in the fourth quarter.

The Whip-Purs (1-5, 1-2) were able to keep the Skyhawks off the scoreboard through a combination of timely tackling, and mistakes by JB’s offense that stalled their drives.

In the meantime, Hampshire picked up a TD with three minutes left in the first half to make the tally 14-6, while Chase Lundry blew through the defensive line for a 5-yard score with six seconds on the clock in the third quarter, making it 14-12.

Hampshire also had problems connecting for its PAT’s, yet took the lead on J. Antonacci’s second TD with three minutes, a 1-yard plunge to go ahead 20-14.

Skyhawks’ effort has never lagged this season, putting together an exciting finish to tie the game. Torgerson tagged Dylan McNish for a 15-yard completion at the two-minute mark. JB went to and notched three straight catches to motor downfield, and Will Rudzena plowed over the goal line from 1 yard out, with 11 seconds left, and a 20-20 tally.

Johnsburg was unable to convert the game-winning extra point moving the contest into an overtime period. Pedersen ran the ball in from 2 yards out, putting JB on top 26-20, and again, this time the PAT kick was blocked.

Hampshire took the ball the other way on the next series, with Lundry on a 2-yard TD. The Whip-Purs picked up their conversion kick, and came away with their first victory this year, 27-26.

Skyhawk notes: JB plays at home Oct. 7 against the McHenry Warriors (2-4).
