A two-minute defensive lapse with less than 20 minutes left of regulation cost the Wilmot Union High School girls soccer team its Southern Lakes Conference opener against visiting Lake Geneva Badger April 27.

The Panthers, who entered play winning two of their last three contests, and the Badgers were held scoreless until the 73rd minute when Lake Geneva’s Brittany Gestrich knocked in the go-ahead goal.

Two minutes later, Gestrich struck again, to secure the Badgers 2-0 win.

Wilmot coach John Watson, who credited senior keeper Meghan Biba’s tenacity, said the loss came down to those two minutes.

“It was just a couple of minutes were we lost some focus,” he said. “Meghan Biba had a good defensive line in front of her.”

With the Badgers maintaining control in Wilmot for most of the contest, Biba held her own, despite several shots toward the net.

“Meghan has as big of a heart as any kid in our program,” said Watson, whose team dropped to 2-7. “She absolutely loves the game and absolutely loves playing keeper.”

Additionally, noting past history, Watson said the Southern Lakes Conference clash with Lake Geneva has always been a challenge.

“We knew we were in trouble, we hadn’t beaten Badger in many years,” he said.

Badger improved to 4-3 with the win.

Earlier in the week, the Panthers won their second contest in three games, courtesy of goals by seniors Deja Simpson and Alexa Lewis against visiting non conference opponent Racine Lutheran to come away with a 2-1 decision April 24.

Falcons split week
Westosha Central, which came off a 3-0 win at Zion-Benton April 25, could not keep the momentum April 27 at Burlington, where the Falcons dropped a 5-0 decision.

The shutout loss to the Demons, who stayed atop of the SLC at 2-0, was the Falcons’ first conference game of the year.

Meanwhile, earlier in the week, Falcons junior Rylee Kennell knocked in her first career goal against the Zeebees with seniors Lindsey Kimpler and Anna Leigh Niles adding the two other goals.
