Against WIAA Division 1 state champion Stevens Point Area Senior High, the Wilmot Union High School softball squad hammered the No. 2 ranked team 10-0 in Poynette, where the Panthers won their first game to Oconomowoc Saturday.
Wilmot, which started the season 1-2, has won nine of 11 games to improve to 10-4.
For SPASH, the school entered the Jamboree boasting a 12-2 record.
Of the Panthers’ 10 runs, eight came in the last three innings, including six from two home runs.
Sophomore Madison Zerr, who delivered the first blow, went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the Panthers’ three-run top of the fifth inning.
Junior Anna Devall, who batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored, put SPASH away the next inning with a grand slam.
Sarah Hutchinson, a senior, struck out five, walked two and allowed four hits through six innings to jump to 7-2.
Panthers pounce late
In the Panthers’ two-run first inning, sophomore leadoff hitter Haley Lamberson, who reached base on a hit by pitch, scored on a fielding error.
After Lamberson, junior Montana Platts (2-for-5, run, RBI) doubled and scored when Kalyssa Koehn (3-for-3, run) hit a double of her own.
In the fourth inning, Wilmot jumped to a 3-0 lead, courtesy of a Platts two-out single to plate Hayli Richards, who walked.
With the Panthers ahead 3-0 entering the fifth inning, they added three more runs, when Richards hit a sacrifice fly to score senior Riley Regnier.
Then, Zerr followed up with a two-run home run to plate Devall.
Then, in the sixth inning, singles by Koehn, Hutchinson and a walk to Regnier sent Devall to the plate, where she belted a grand slam to seal the Panthers 10-0 victory.
Taking the loss for Stevens Point was Andrea Cherney, who tossed four innings, struck out one, walked four and allowed five earned runs on nine hits.
Wilmot 14, Oconomowoc 3
Courtesy of 12 runs in the first two innings, Wilmot Union High School cruised to a 14-3 defeat of Oconomowoc in the opening game of the Poynette Jamboree.
Zerr, a left-hander, improved to 3-1 in the pitcher’s circle, where she walked none, struck out seven and allowed three runs on four hits.
At the plate, the Panthers received multiple hits from Kalyssa Koehn (2-for-3, two runs, RBI), Sarah Hutchinson (2-for-3, two runs, RBI), Riley Regnier (2-for-3, three RBI, run) and Zerr (2-for-3, 2B, RBI).
Hayli Richards, a junior, went 1-for-2 with three RBI and a home run.
Picking up the loss for Oconomowoc was Kayla Preisler (4 IP, 12 hits, eight earned runs, two strikeouts).
