As Josh Schattner continued to throw strikes against non-conference opponent Racine Park May 5 at Racine’s Horlick Field, the Wilmot Union High School senior was not aware of his potential milestone until the tail end of the contest, a 12-0 Wilmot victory.

The milestone was a five-inning no-hitter where he struck out six and walked two to pick up his second win of the season.

“I actually had no idea about it until about the fourth or fifth inning when my team let me know about it,” said Schattner, who retired the Racine Park order in the bottom of the fifth to notch the milestone.

Schattner, a Winona State University commit, said the team’s offensive production allowed him to pitch with the ease.

Wilmot, which posted three runs in the first two innings, added nine more in the fourth and fifth inning.

“The nice thing about it was that my team put on a lot of runs, so all I had to do was throw strikes,” he said. “I only walked two guys and I just let my defense behind me make plays for me.”

As he threw strikes, his teammates Gunner Peterson and Justin Paasch combined to hit 4-for-7 with two runs scored and seven RBI.

Gunner Peterson, who went 3-for-3, scored two runs and knocked in three more.

For Paasch, he had four RBI and finished 1-for-4.

According to Schattner, whose team capped off its third straight win May 5, timely hitting has been crucial through this hot streak.

“This past week, we have definitely been hitting the ball a lot better, if we keep this up, we will be a tough team to beat,” said Schattner.

Wilmot jumped to 8-4 after the win and remained 5-4 in the Southern Lakes Conference.

Central snaps skid
Although Kenosha Tremper had an answer for every Westosha Central run, the Falcons found a rhythm in the bottom of the fifth inning, where they produced three runs to snap a two-game losing skid May 5.

The Falcons, who lost to Bradford and Elkhorn earlier, improved to 6-8 after the win and remained 2-5 in the Southern Lakes Conference.

“I’m really proud of the way we competed in every aspect of the game,” said Falcons’ coach Jake Morman. “We had some of our best at bats of the year (May 5) and took advantage of our opportunities.”

The victory, however, comes in spite of a difficult outing by Alex Salerno, who allowed three earned runs on five hits in one inning.

Morman credits senior Bryce Edwards for his relief appearance, where he walked three, struck out two and allowed one earned run on three hits through six innings.
“Bryce Edwards really stepped up big for us today on the mound when we needed a win to get our confidence back,” said Morman.

At the plate, Falcon contributors were Salerno (1-for-3, three runs), Garrett Gilbert (1-for-4, double, RBI), Josh Leslie (3-for-4, double, run, two RBI, run) and Tanner Bykowski (2-for-3, two doubles, RBI, run).

Wilmot 7, St. Joseph’s 4
Gunner Peterson contributed at the plate and on the mound to extend the Panthers win streak to four games after a 7-4 defeat of visiting Kenosha St. Joseph’s Saturday.
Gunner Peterson, who tossed six innings, struck out 10 hitters, walked one and allowed one earned run on seven hits. He also batted 1-for-3 with a run.

Elkhorn 6, Westosha Central 3
A three-run third inning along with two runs in the seventh helped visiting Elkhorn 6-3 defeat Westosha Central in a Southern Lakes Conference contest May 4.

The Falcons, who scored two runs in the first, were led by junior Josh Leslie and senior Trent Jones, both of whom combined to hit 4-for-7 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Leslie, an infielder, collected a triple along with a stolen base to finish 2-for-4 with a run scored.

For Jones, he had two stolen bases, and went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Senior Garrett Gilbert, meanwhile, went 1-for-4 with a home run.

Bradford 5, Westosha Central 3
Host Westosha Central could not overcome a four-run sixth inning by Kenosha Bradford on May 3, when the Red Devils edged the Falcons 5-3.

The non conference loss dropped the Falcons to 5-7 overall.

Junior infielder Josh Leslie went 4-for-4, including two doubles, had a stolen base along with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Falcons.

Austin Glidden, a sophomore, chipped in with a 2-for-3 game.

Wilmot 7, Delavan-Darien 0
While Wilmot Union High School’s Troy Hickey and A.J. Frisby combined to shut down Delavan-Darien, the Panthers scored seven runs in two innings to defeat the Comets 7-0 in the second game of a May 2 doubleheader held in Delavan-Darien.

Hickey, who picked up his first win as a senior (1-2), struck out six, walked three and allowed three hits through six innings. Frisby allowed no hits, walked none and struck out two in the final frame.

Meanwhile, at the plate, Hickey went 2-for-2 with a run.

Gunner Peterson went 2-for-3, knocked in two runs and also scored.

Tanner Peterson, however, went 1-for-2 with two runs and had an RBI.

Wilmot 14, Delavan-Darien 2
Courtesy of 12 runs in the last three innings, including a five-run fourth inning, the Wilmot Union High School baseball team edged host Delavan-Darien 14-2 in the first game of a doubleheader May 2.

Junior Kyle Gendron, who has amassed three complete games, added his fourth in a six inning appearance where he matched his career-high in strikeouts with nine.

Additionally, Gendron (4-0) walked one and allowed one earned run on eight hits.

The Panthers’ received contributions from Gunner Peterson (2-for-3, two runs), Justin Paasch (2-for-3, four runs, RBI) Tanner Peterson (4-for-4, four RBI, run) and Gendron (2-for-4, run, RBI).
