Westosha’s Anderson starts Comet sweep

Behind the sophomore pitching duo of Dylan Anderson and Alex Salerno, Westosha Central swept visiting Delavan-Darien in a Southern Lakes Conference doubleheader May 11.

After Anderson, who helped the Falcons win the first game 7-2, Salerno capped off the doubleheader with a 4-0 shutout.

Falcons coach Jake Morman came away impressed with the production of both sophomore pitchers.

“They located their spots really well tonight,” he said. “They challenged the hitters and made them hit their pitches.”

Combined, the Falcons pounded out 12 hits in both contests.

Morman believes the Tremper victory a week earlier was pivotal to the Falcons’ sweep of the Comets.

“It is kind of a carry over from the Tremper game, we really took a step forward as a team, energy wise,” he said.

Westosha Central 7, Delavan-Darien 2
After the first inning, with the score tied at 2-2, Anderson found the right mix of pitches to hold the Comets scoreless the rest of the contest.

Through seven innings, Anderson struck out three and allowed two earned runs on five hits.

“It feels good to win, we got a winning streak going,” said Anderson. “This is our opportunity going forward an into the playoffs.”

At the plate, chipping in for the Falcons were Salerno (3-for-4, double, two runs, RBI), junior Josh Leslie (1-for-3, three runs, two RBI) and senior Parker Krumm (2-for-3, run).

Westosha Central 4, Delavan-Darien 0

Salerno, who walked none, struck out three Comets through seven innings.

“I got my command early on and just went from there,” said Salerno. “But, it is easy when you got a great defense behind you.”

The Falcons, who committed no errors, knocked in a run in the first, two in the third and added their last run in the fourth.

As Salerno cruised, the Falcons received contributions from Leslie (2-for-2, two RBI, run, double) and Krumm (2-for-3, run, RBI).

Westosha Central 11-13, Hartford 2-1
Visiting Westosha Central swept Hartford in a nonconference doubleheader May 13, when the Falcons opened with an 11-2 decision followed by a 13-2 edge.

The Falcons, who extended their win streak to five games, jumped to 10-8 overall with the wins.

In the first game, the Falcons received contributions from Alex Salerno (3-for-4, RBI, run), Garrett Gilbert (4-for-5, two runs, three RBI), Bryce Edwards (2-for-4, two RBI, run) and Tanner Bykowski (2-for-2, two runs, two RBI).

On the mound, Parker Krumm picked up the win, tossing six innings, struck out five, walked three and allowed two earned runs on six hits.

For the second game, the Falcons scored seven runs in the third and another six in the fourth to come away with a 13-1 decision.

Salerno, who hit a home run, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Edwards contributed on the mound, where he notched the win, and at the plate (5 IP, 3H, ER, 3 walked, four strikeouts; 1-for-2, three RBI).

Wilmot 6, Racine Horlick 1

Senior Josh Schattner, coming off a no-hitter against Racine Park, pitched six innings to pick up the win for the Panthers.

Through six innings, Schattner struck out seven, walked three and allowed one earned run on eight hits.

Wilmot, which scored two runs in the first inning, starting with a Justin Paasch single to score Gunner Peterson (2-for-4, run, RBI). Paasch, who went 1-for-2, scored on an A.J. Frisby single.

In the second inning, the Panthers bolstered their lead to 4-0, when Zach Lamberson scored on a single by Gunner Peterson. Wilmot added its second run on a Tanner Peterson single to score senior Troy Hickey, who reached on a fielding error.

Wilmot improved to 11-5 overall and stays at 7-4 in conference play.

Wilmot 2, Badger 1
With a 1-1 stalemate in the sixth inning, the Panthers jumped ahead, courtesy of a junior Jacob Gerzal single to score junior A.J. Frisby to come away with a 2-1 Southern Lakes Conference win May 11.

Hickey, a left-hander, picked up the win, tossing seven innings, where he allowed one earned run on four hits, walked four and struck out four.
