SLC TRACK: A Falcon girls four-peat

School records broken

Sparked by seniors Madi Hansen and Amanda Sabourin, the Westosha Central High School girls track squad notched its fourth consecutive Southern Lakes Conference title Tuesday in Burlington.

Hansen, a pole vaulter, not only matched her personal record of 11-feet, the score also tied the SLC meet record.

For Sabourin, she added her third consecutive discus title, marked by a throw of 124-06.

Also, the meet brought in two new school record holders from both Westosha Central and Wilmot.

For the third place Falcon boys, senior sprinter Austin Kurylo collected three titles (100, 11.34 seconds; 200, 23.07), including his school record 21-feet-10 inches in the long jump. It is his second school record of the season.

The other record breaker came from Wilmot junior Julissa Scott, who had a 5-4 in the high jump for the fourth-place Panthers. Previously, Scott’s personal best was 5-2, set four times.

Panthers’ Martin, Kostrova add hardware
Scott’s teammate, senior Maddie Martin won the 200-meter dash (26.80) to collect her eighth overall SLC title, including her contribution on the winning 1,600 relay team Tuesday.

Martin placed second in the 400 dash (58.66).

Panthers’ senior Rachel Kostrova, who pitched in on six of Martin’s titles as a relay teammate, finished third in two other events (100, 13.23; 400, 58.75).

Joining the senior duo of Kostrova and Martin on the 1,600 relay were senior Julia Shurtleff and sophomore Gretta Cieslak.

Senior Kristen Carlson, who had seven wins in the triple jump, added her first career SLC title with a leap of 35-07.5 to give her eight after the conference meet.

In other Panther achievements, junior Samantha Serak continues to match her personal best of 5-02 in the high jump, where she placed third at the SLC meet.

Poco paces Panther boys
For the fourth place Panthers, junior Anthony Poco won titles as a member of two relay teams (400, 44.53; 1,600, 3:23.78) and finished second in two other events (long jump, 20-10; 200 dash, 23.12).

Senior Zac Schrader, Poco’s teammate on both relay teams, added a third victory as a member of the 800 relay team (1:32.94).

The 800 relay team consisted of juniors Robert Brent and Jordan Jesse along with sophomore Cullen Ketterhagen.

Brent also was on the 400 relay team while Jesse served on the 1,600 relay.

Additionally, Ketterhagen, who had a personal best of 10:11.16 seconds in the 300 hurdles at the Borg Invite, placed second in the event on Tuesday (42.67).

Senior Matt Cieslak, a contributor to the winning 1,600 relay team, also placed second in the 400 dash (50.17).

Huggins, Engberg rule Falcons field
In addition Kurylo’s three titles, Westosha Central had three other winners, including senior Hunter Huggins in discus and junior Joshua Engberg for the pole vault.

Huggins, last year’s discus winner, added his second title Tuesday with a throw of 149-10. He also placed second in the shot put (44-05).

Engberg won the pole vault with a score of 12-06.

Sheel Patel was the third winner after he finished his 3,200 run at 10:23.10.

Junior Mason Welter added to the Falcons team score, taking second in the triple jump, where he had a 39-07.

Shane, Ziemelis reinforce Falcon title
As Hansen and Sabourin collected titles, senior Kylie Shane bolstered Westosha Central’s efforts to garner a fourth straight championship, contributed to three relay teams.

For the second place 1,600 relay, Shane and Sabourin joined Jaden Morris and Julia Ziemelis to register a time of 4:14.12.

Also, Shane and Sabourin were on the third place 400 relay team, which included Jaden McKenna and Twila Dovas (53.25).

Shane also helped the 800 relay team of Dovas, McKenna and Brenna Maloney take third (1:55.77).

Ziemelis, meanwhile, finished second in 300 hurdles (52.43) and was a member of the winning 3,200 relay team consisting of Heaven Anderson, MacKenzie Maccaux and Brenna Maloney (10:34.61).

In distances races, junior Meghan Capra finished third in the 1,600 (5:32.10) and 3,200 (12:24.98).
