As the Wilmot Union High School boys dominated relay events, Westosha Central flourished in the field at Thursday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional in Stoughton, where 13 students from both schools qualified for the state meet in La Crosse next weekend.
The Panthers, who qualified four relay teams, garnered a sectional title winner in the 1,600-meter relay consisting of juniors Anthony Poco, Jordan Jesse along with seniors Zac Schrader and Matt Cieslak (3 minutes, 21.82 seconds).
For the Falcons, however, they completed a sectional sweep in the pole vault, where senior Madi Hansen won for the girls and junior Joshua Engberg took first in boys competition.
Hansen scored a 10-6 while Engberg cleared the bar at 13-06.
Amanda Sabourin, a Westosha Central senior, added the school’s third sectional victory in the discus with a throw of 126-04.
Additionally, in the boys discus event, senior Hunter Huggins qualified for the state meet after he registered a score of 156-06 to finish third.
While Huggins, Hansen and Engberg make their first state appearance, the experience is not new for Sabourin, who qualified as a junior.
Panther boys add more
If a sectional title was not enough, the Wilmot boys qualified in two other relay events, the 800 and 400.
In the 800 relay, junior Robert Brent joined Poco, Jesse and Schrader to finish second at 1:30.48.
Like the 800 relay, Wilmot notched second in the 400 relay, which had a team of Poco, Brent, Cieslak and Schrader. The 400 relay clocked in at 43.42.
Individually, sophomore Cullen Ketterhagen receives his first state berth after he placed second in the 300-meter hurdles at 40.40.
Duo leads Panther girls
Seniors Maddie Martin and Rachel Kostrova, state qualifiers in relay events since their sophomore seasons, made it three straight after finishing second in 1,600 relay at 4:04.35.
Joining Martin and Kostrova were senior Julia Shurtleff and sophomore Gretta Cieslak, all of whom advanced to the state meet last season.
Martin and Kostrova also qualified for the state meet in the 400 dash, where Martin finished second at 57.83 and Kostrova placed third at 58.28.
Kostrova makes her first individual appearance.
