While the Wilmot Union High School athletic program filled one coaching vacancy, the decision opened another, after the school announced Keiya Square as the Panthers new head football coach.

Square, who replaces Erick Kaiser, departs his position as the head girls basketball coach following six seasons.

Kaiser, a math teacher, also served as the school’s strength and conditioning coordinator before his resignation from all three roles last week, a school press release states, adding he stepped down due to personal reasons.

“Coach Kaiser was a role-model to many of his students as a coach, a teacher, and our strength and conditioning coordinator. Words cannot express enough the gratitude Wilmot High School has to Coach Kaiser and his wife Nikki,” the release states. “He has meant a great deal to the Wilmot Athletic Program, his athletes and his students in the classroom, not just on the football field, but in life.”

Kaiser’s wife, Nikki, also was a teacher at Wilmot.

After Kaiser’s resignation, the school pointed to Square, who guided the Wilmot girls basketball program to three Southern Lakes Conference titles in six seasons.

Overall, Square compiled a career 188-86 record between Wilmot and Delavan-Darien, where he started his head girls basketball coaching career.

“He is a great role model who has impacted many lives already in our school both as athletes and human beings,” the release states. “His services will be missed greatly as Girls Basketball Coach and we will now begin the hiring process of finding a replacement.”

Square, an assistant coach under Kaiser, takes the reigns of a football team which went 22-9 under Kaiser’s guidance.

In Kaiser’s three seasons, the Panthers won the Southern Lakes Conference title in 2014, when the Panthers finished in a four-way tie.

While the head coaching role is new to Square, the sport is not, marked by his experience as a student at Delavan-Darien followed by four years at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

As a Warhawk, Square was a fullback, capitalizing on red zone offense situations.

From 2001-04, Square scored 22 touchdowns, including a team-leading nine as a senior.

“Keiya is a proven winner as a head coach in basketball, track, and as an assistant football coach at both Wilmot and Delavan-Darien High School,” the release states.
