This week will tell a lot about the Westosha Central girls volleyball team.

Central traveled to the state’s top-ranked Division 1 team Tuesday night and will follow that with its own Central Smash Tournament Saturday that features a field littered with quality programs.

The invite, set to begin at 9 a.m., includes top-ranked teams in Division 1 (Burlington), Division 2 (Waukesha Catholic Memorial) and Division 4 (Catholic Central High School) along with third-ranked Divine Savior Holy Angels.

Central played at Burlington Tuesday in a tuneup for this weekend.

Joining that group are Kenosha Tremper, Big Foot and Cedarburg in what is sure to be a full day of topnotch volleyball, Central coach Charlie Berg said.

“(The tournament) is just a good way to finish the (regular) season off with good competition,” he said.

Berg said his young group can gain some additional valuable experience with the number of talented players and teams the Falcons will see this weekend.

“The tournaments we’re in over the year are just real competitive,” he said. “We start with the Joust, then we go to Brookfield, then the Sprawl. All those are high-level tournaments that we’ve held our own in.

“We’ve played consistently well against topnotch teams. We’re right there in the mix. We just have to finish a few games, win a few and get ready for the postseason.”

Central played just one match last week and improved to 5-0 in the Southern Lakes Conference with a 25-12, 25-8, 25-13 win Sept. 27 at Elkhorn.

Berg called the match one of his team’s most complete of the fall.

“I told them it was going to be a ‘turning the page’ kind of a match,” he said. “I thought our kids played extremely well. Defensively, we did everything in system, and offensively, we spread the ball around well. Consistently, across the board, we did an excellent job.”

Leading the way for the Falcons were Jenna Jehlicka with nine kills; Danielle Rampart with eight kills and 14 digs; Ashley Jehlicka with eight kills; Lauren Hickson with five kills, 15 assists and six aces; Sarah Horton with 10 digs; and Jackie McDonough with 16 assists.
