Tough season continues for Panther girls

A season full of struggles continued down that path last week for the Wilmot girls volleyball team.

The Panthers traveled to Union Grove in search of their first Southern Lakes Conference victory, but the Broncos refused to allow that in a 25-7, 25-15, 25-16 victory.

Wilmot coach Lindsey Gruber said school-sponsored college visits for the seniors and ACT testing for the juniors took their toll on the Panthers by the time the match started.

“They mentally were not there,” she said. ‘It would have been a good matchup if we had mentally been at the game. Despite not being there mentally, they fought to the end.”

On top of those distractions were several injuries that forced Gruber to shuffle her lineup. Jenna Venem continues to miss time with a fractured nose, while Ashlyn Wright suffered a thumb injury in practice.

Despite all those obstacles, Gruber was proud that her team battled.

“It just seemed like we were one step behind all night long,” she said.

Wilmot was back in action Tuesday night against visiting Delavan-Darien for Senior Night. The Panthers then will be idle until the following Tuesday, Oct. 11, when they travel to Badger High School for a 6:30 p.m. matchup.

“I am expecting a great game (against Delavan),” Gruber said. “It should be very close, and I think that this one we can come out on top. I’m hoping for a good, healthy practice Monday, and I hope they play their hearts out Tuesday night.”
