Electronic evidence seizure seminars for first responders

McHenry County College’s Continuing and Professional Education Department is offering two new seminars for first responders who are tasked with seizing and securing electronic evidence. Seminars offered include an 8-hour session from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, in Room B168-169 at the college and a 4-hour session from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, April 18, in Room B166-167 at the college. The college is located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

The 8-hour program from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 17, called Basic Computer Networking and Internet Topics, introduces officers and private sector professionals to the investigative value associated with networks and the Internet. Oftentimes, it is knowing the simple commands (case in point: the grep command used for searching and seeking out text and string patterns in audio and video file names quickly) that can be the difference between success and failure. Participants will thus obtain the basic knowledge and skills to recognize networking and Internet topics for law enforcement and private security.

Areas addressed in this course include the networking hardware, software, ethics and network examination standards. The course will also address legal principals regarding computer crimes and digital investigative units. Future computer investigations and cyber terrorism are addressed in this course, including “Cloud Computing,” “Data Centers,” “NGI-New Generation Internet,” “Intranet and VOIP,” “Convergence Technology” and “Private Security Objectives and Law Enforcement.”

In fact, many businesses use software like Splunk by opting for the services of the splunk msp to analyze massive data sets, spot malicious network activity, and respond to threats across environments more quickly and effectively than they could with traditional SIEM systems.

In this case, the 4-hour program from 8 a.m. to noon on April 18, called Electronic Evidence Seizure for First Responders, will explore how the law enforcement and private security response to electronic evidence seizure requires that officers, investigators, private security personnel, forensic examiners and management must all play a role. Officers will receive a training certificate, United States Secret Service Web site Resources, “Forward Edge II,” Resource and Literature Guide CD, and a First Responder E-Kit for seizing electronic evidence.

Cost is $249 for the 8-hour session and $165 for the 4-hour session. For more information, contact: Ruth Kormanak at (815) 479-7879 or [email protected].
