The final score of last week’s Southern Lakes Conference win at Delavan-Darien shows a rather comfortable victory for the Westosha Central softball team.

But Central co-coach Tom Lampe knows his team was in a bit of a battle with the Comets.

And he hopes his team took notice.

Central took a comfortable 7-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back in a 12-0, five-inning victory. The win improved the Falcons to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the SLC.

Lampe was impressed with the Comets’ effort.

“Delavan is a much-improved team,” he said. “They really came out and played hard.

“In this conference, we know we have to focus on the next game and not look ahead. I think the team sees room for improvement.”

After the Falcons scored seven runs in the second inning, they added a single tally in the third, three in the fourth and one more in the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Brittany Blazich led the offense with four hits, a run scored and an RBI, followed by Hayden Krueger with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Larkin Langston added two hits, including a triple, a run scored and two RBI, followed by Sarah Fonk with two hits, including a home run, two runs scored and two RBI.

Jessica Shane also scored twice for the Falcons.

Fonk, whose home run was a shot to the left field gap, pitched all five innings to pick up the win. She allowed three hits, one walk and struck out seven.

But it wasn’t always easy, Lampe said.

“Sarah struggled with a few of her pitches and was able to work through it and keep control of the game,” he said. “This was one of those times where she relied on the defense to help her out.”

Central had been scheduled to host Badger and travel to Elkhorn last week, but both games were postponed because of rain. The Elkhorn game will be made up May 23, while a rescheduled date for the Badger game had yet to be determined.

The Falcons traveled to Waterford Monday and to Union Grove, the state’s top-ranked Division 1 team, Wednesday. Central hosts rival Wilmot, ranked second, Friday at 4:30 p.m.
