SLC Volleyball: Central places third in conference tournament

Selburg notches career milestone

Junior setter Sydney Selburg achieved a career benchmark with the Westosha Central girls volleyball team during the Oct. 16 Southern Lakes Conference tournament at Lake Geneva Badger.

Westosha Central junior setter Sydney Selburg leaps up for a kill during a match earlier this season. Selburg eclipsed 1,000 career assists for the Falcons during last weekend’s Southern Lakes Conference tournament at Lake Geneva Badger (Nancy Switalla).

Selburg, who eclipsed 1,000 career assists, helped the Falcons finish third in the tournament behind winner Burlington and second place Waterford.

“Overall, we played well,” said Falcons coach Megan Awe. “Defensively, we were scrappy and offensively players stepped up to make big plays when we needed.”

The Falcons opened the tournament with a win against Delavan-Darien, 25-15, 25-16, where Selburg notched her career milestone with a big kill from senior Lauren Foerster.

In the conference semifinals, against Waterford, the Falcons were unable to defeat the Wolverines for the second time in the regular season.

Waterford, which lost to Westosha Central in regular season play, edged the Falcons on Saturday in a closely contested three sets, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13.

“We played a close battle against Waterford and lost a close one which kept us out of the conference championship match,” said Awe.

Westosha Central, however, came away with a third place finish after defeating Union Grove, 25-22, 25-22, 15-9.

Through three matches, Selburg accounted for 53 assists, 10 digs and 11 kills.

The Falcons also received contributions from Foerster (23 kills, eight aces, 17 digs), junior Karis Bridleman (21 kills, four aces, 18 digs) and freshman libero Shelby Fabbri (three aces, 16 digs).

Information from Wilmot’s tournament appearance was not available as of Monday.

For Westosha Central, which improved to 18-14, entered Thursday’s WIAA Division 1 regional as the fifth seed and hosted No. 12 Madison La Follette.

The winner of the Westosha Central/Madison La Follette advanced to Saturday’s regional final against either No. 4 Janesville Craig or 13th seeded Beloit Memorial.

Wilmot, seeded 14th, traveled to No. 3 Waterford on Thursday.

Wilmot or Waterford played the winner of No. 11 Elkhorn and sixth-seeded Milton Saturday.
