Horses rescued from Wheatland barn fire

Authorities report no loss of life, injuries to law enforcement

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department reported no loss of life from a barn fire in the Town of Wheatland on Sunday.

While the homeowners rescued the horses inside the barn, according to the Sheriff’s Department, a deputy and sergeant from its department experienced non-life threatening injuries.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, shortly after 8 p.m. May 1, Kenosha County deputies and fire/rescue personal from multiple departments responded to the 6800 block of 317th Avenue for barn on fire.

Kenosha authorities, meanwhile, learned the horses were still inside the barn while they were en route to the scene.

But once they arrived, the horses had been rescued by the homeowners, with none of the animals experiencing any injuries.

“One of the homeowners was transported to an area hospital for possible smoke inhalation,” Sgt. David Wright, of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. “The barn was completely destroyed by the fire, but no other structures were damaged.”

As of Monday, the cause of the fire is unknown, but authorities do not call the blaze suspicious.

Additionally, authorities shut down Highway 50 for some time, citing visibility concerns while firefighters battled the blaze.

While on the scene, a Sheriff’s sergeant and deputy became injured, when a piece of firefighting equipment knocked both of them to the ground.

“Rescue personnel transported the sergeant to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The deputy was subsequently treated and released at the hospital as well,” Wright said.

Since the incident injured members of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, the Wisconsin State Patrol will handle the investigation, according to Wright.
