Knights of Columbus, area community steps up for Ukraine

Volunteers collect donations on April 23 in downtown Twin Lakes for the people of Ukraine (Submitted/The Report).

The Knights of Columbus, Twin Lakes Council No. 6554, raised more than $5,000 for the people of Ukraine during an April 23 fundraiser at multiple area locations.

Ukraine, besieged by a Russian invasion, has experienced loss of life and property during the conflict with many fleeing from the country.

The fundraiser, organized by Grand Knight John Taylor, brought many volunteers from several community organizations and raised $5,200 with 100% of the proceeds directly donated to the people of Ukraine.

Members of the Knights of Columbus organized the fundraisers at Ace Hardware in Twin Lakes as well as the Travel Center and International House of Wine and Cheese in Genoa City.

According to organizers, in addition to Knights of Columbus members, volunteers from St. John the Evangelist in Twin Lakes, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in New Munster, and other organizations contributed their time to the fundraisers.

Organizers extended gratitude to the community, including the volunteers, for their assistance in the fundraiser.

“The Knights would like to thank all of the people who so generously donated, and would also like to thank all of the volunteers for their time and efforts,” the group said in a statement.
