Two area high schools are reeling from the tragic deaths of teachers David and Kristin Novaez, who were killed Sunday afternoon when their motorcycle struck a sport utility vehicle that reportedly pulled out in front of them.

David Novaez, 48, had been the German teacher at Westosha Central High School since 2007. He also served as senior class advisor in the past and was a forensic coach for many years. Kristin Novaez, 36, was the choral director at Union Grove High School. The couple did not have children and lived in Wheatland.

Just before 3 p.m. Oct. 9, the Noveazs were traveling north on County Highway P when driver Ralph Johnson, 20, of Wheatland, pulled out from a stop sign into their path in his Chevy Blazer, Sgt. Bill Beth of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department said.

David Novaez, 48, died at the scene. Kristin Novaez, 36, suffered a severed leg and died following surgery at Froedert Hospital later that evening. Beth said the couple were both wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Johnson submitted to blood tests and there is no suspicion of drug or alcohol use, according to Beth.

Johnson was cited for failure to yield right of way causing death and failure to yield right of way causing injury.  The second citation will be updated to failure to yield right of way causing death, due to the death of Kristin Novaez.

Both schools have met with staff and students and have counselors available to assist with the grieving process.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Please see this week’s print editions of the Westosha Report and Westine Report for additional coverage of the fatal crash.
