Silver Lake unveils ambitious road project

By Gail Peckler-Dziki~Correspondent

The Silver Lake Village Board unanimously approved the borrowing of up to $225,000 and using $113,704 of budgeted money and money left from last year to repair roads and a storm water project.

The plan is to rework the east lane of School Street from Dells to South and resurface the west lane of School Street from Dells to South. Also, to resurface, replace culverts and repairs ditches Riverside Drive from 5th Street to the village limits. Included in the project is to restripe the village parking lot with straight rather than slanted stripes to allow parking from either entrance.

Village trustee Pat Dunn said taking out a loan and making payments would keep   costs lower than having several different projects.

“If we have these issues taken care of while the equipment in here and we do it this year while materials costs are lower, we save money.”

The cost of repairing the storm water system on Riverside Drive is estimated at $11,600 and the money would come from the storm water sewer fund. According to village president Jeff Albrecht, Riverside Drive potholes are repaired weekly, but nothing major has been done to that road for at least 20 years.

The project would start in a month and take about a month, according to village officials.

Help with animal control

The board discussed public works to assist the police department with animal control. According to trustee Dave Snow, “Many calls about loose animals come when the police are off duty.”

Trustee Soti Wilber asked for details regarding equipment, training for public works personnel and transportation to the Humane Society. The item was tabled until a detailed plan can be created.

Lake district discussed

During citizen comments, former village trustee Barb Ironside asked about setting up a lake district. “The lake is a wonderful natural resource,” she said, “and we could partner with Salem to create a lake district.”

Ironside mentioned that the lake is so shallow this year and it’s a big problem. Ironside also turned over a report on weeds in the lake from Jeff Feltzer from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The report stated that the growth of exotic weeds such as milfoil was up this spring, especially on the west side of the lake where growth extended 400 feet from shore. The report also said that the growth of exotics weeds was increased in all the lakes.
