Old Settler’s dog park to be named for Paddock Lake-area veterinarian and family

Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser recently announced that the off-leash dog park at Old Settlers Park will be named to honor Dr. William Harris, a local veterinarian, and his family.

The Harris family donated $12,500 to assist in the upkeep and improvements to the dog park. Kreuser said the dog park will now be known as the Harris Family Dog Park.

The announcement was made at a news conference July 11 at Old Settlers Park, just outside of the gates of the off-leash dog park.

Kenosha County has three off-leash dog parks. Two were previously named for their benefactors, who had also donated $12,500: the Carlisle Family Dog Park, from a donation from Dr. William Carlisle, a Kenosha area veterinarian, at Petrifying Springs Park, 4700 Hwy JR, Kenosha, WI 53144; and the Warren Close Bark Park, named to honor the father of Mary Ellen Close, who made the donation to the dog park at KD Park, 35610 89th Street, Twin Lakes, WI 53181.

Kreuser said the donations help keep the cost of maintenance and improvements to the dog parks off of the county tax levy. The dog parks are also supported through user fees. Daily passes or annual tags are required for users.

“We appreciate the support of Dr. Harris and his family to help the off-leash dog parks be sustainable and to make improvements,” Kreuser said. “The off-leash dog parks are an excellent addition to Kenosha County.”

Dr. Harris and his wife, Sara, along with their children, Benjamin Harris, and Andrew and Michael Bisciglia, attended the news conference and helped unveil a temporary sign.

“I thought it was a good time to give back to the community that has supported me for 30 years,” said Dr. Harris, who owns Harris Pet Hospital, 24424 75th St., Paddock Lake.

Village President Marlene Goodson said the village has noticed an increase in use of the park, as well as a boost to area businesses, since the opening of the off-leash dog park.

County Board Supervisor Michael Underhill, who represents the Paddock Lake area on the Kenosha County Board, thanked Dr. Harris and his family for supporting the dog park.

“I’m glad to see support from Dr. Harris, the County Board, County Executive Kreuser and the Village of Paddock Lake for the off-leash dog park. It has helped to enhance Old Settlers Park, which is a great county park,” Underhill said.
