Spring Grove Firefighters Association to host annual steak fry is Saturday

The smells of outdoor grill cooking and the waning vestiges of summertime will be wafting over the grounds of Horse Fair Park in Spring Grove today, Saturday, Aug. 25, as the Spring Grove Firefighters Association hosts its annual steak fry and raffle to help fund equipment purchases and programs for the fire protection district.

The popular event, with food being served from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., features a variety of activities in a family-friendly vein, and a chance for the community to come together on a Saturday night. The entertainment will last until 11 p.m. with the musical styles for dancing supplied by DJ Bob Hahn at the turntable.

“We’ve been doing this for 16 years, and every time the attendance gets bigger and better, although the recent economy issues have impacted the event,” said Bob Stevens, the association’s President and the Spring Grove fire protection district’s Assistant Fire Chief. “Families come out and have a great time, it’s like a big family picnic for the community.

“The beautiful thing is how it helps us in raising money for purchasing new equipment for the district, such as the new ambulance for emergency response that we’re acquiring. The revenues also go toward our yearly scholarships, sponsorship of little league teams for baseball, and donating to local organizations.”

Last year, proceeds from the event accumulated $4,000 in funds which were donated directly to a summer camp for juvenile burn victims to enjoy outdoor activities, held at Volo’s Camp Duncan.

“We also wanted to let everyone know that mini-raffles will be held throughout the night, with prizes donated by local businesses and individuals,” said Stevens. “The whole point is to have good fun, and have some good food.”

Stevens had said the steaks were obtained from Wilson’s Meats in Elkhorn, Wis., and that “people in the area are well aware of the high quality meats from the company. We’re also once again using the secret recipe used by our fire chief Rich Tobiacz.

“We still can’t divulge what it is, otherwise it wouldn’t be secret any more,” he said.

The steak dinners ($16), chicken dinners ($14), and the pulled pork sandwich dinners ($12) are all made fresh to order. The side dishes with the dinner include a baked potato, cole slaw, sweet corn, bread roll, and dessert. The sweet corn is directly from the fields of Stade’s Farms near Johnsburg.

For children, there are hot dog meals available, as an alternative to the regular menu. Various beverages will be sold, along will adult libations, and can be purchased separately.

“All the food is locally grown, or locally made, something we’ve always strived to do, and the quality really comes through,” said Stevens. “We’re looking forward to a great evening in the community.”

Horse Fair Park is located at 8105 Blivin Street in Spring Grove, and for more information, contact the fire protection district at (815) 675-2450.
