Concealed carry will be allowed on village property

Residents who have a state-issued concealed carry permit will not be prohibited from bringing registered firearms into any Twin Lakes municipal building.

Monday night members of the Twin Lakes Village Board continued a discussion that began well before Nov. 1, when Wisconsin Act 35 went into affect, making Wisconsin the 49th state to recognize lawful concealed carry.

Trustees decided to follow state statues when it comes to new concealed law rather than go against the grain. While legal to prohibit firearms carried by the public into municipal buildings, trustees voiced concern it would open the door to liabilities, should a resident adhere to posted signs and someone else did not and an injury occurred as a result.

The village will rewrite a portion of the weapons ordinance concerning municipal fines and privately posted businesses. It was noted as an example that Sentry grocery store has posted signs prohibiting firearms in the store. The village will rewrite the ordinance so a municipal fine can be issued should someone ignore that sign. Private businesses have the right to prohibit firearms.

“No Weapons Allowed” signs are available at the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department inside the Public Safety Building, 1000 55th St., Kenosha and at the elected officials’ window at the Kenosha County Center, 19600 75th St. Bristol.

Business owners who would like to have a sign need to provide a business card. A record of who receives signs will be kept.  Signs can also be downloaded from the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department website at co.kenosha.wi.us/sheriff for free. Click on the “Printable Concealed Carry Prohibited Signs” button in the “Important Links” section.

While other signs are legal, Sheriff David Beth said on Nov. 1 it will provide some uniformity throughout the county.

The Department of Justice has established a question and answer website as www.doj.state.wi.us/dles/cib/ConcealedCarry/ConcealedCarry.asp.
