Board approves high tech equipment with low ball price

For less than $2,400 and the cost of gas to crisscross the twin lakes at a leisurely pace, the village will get a birds eye view of weed growth under the surface.

During the Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District Quarterly meeting Monday night, board members discussed awarding a contract to Professional Lake Weed Monitoring Services from Contour Innovations LLC.

The one-year contract, not to exceed $1,775 and the purchase of the Lowrance HDS 5 Unit fish finder, not to exceed $689, was approved. Tony Migon told the board the technology allows users to see where the weeds are.

Trustee Kevin Fitzgerald purchased one for personal use and used it on a 60-acre lake. “It’s so simple. It did everything it advertised.”

Basically software is loaded and the fish finder can be attached to any boat. The operator runs a grid pattern on the lake and downloads the information and sends it to the Minnesota-based company.

“Within an hour I had a complete map of what I had covered. It showed water temperature, depths, where the seaweed beds are,” Fitzgerald said.

The one-year contract allows users to download information as many times as needed.

“We could basically lay maps on top of each other and see where the growth problems are and what areas need attention,” Migon said. Fitzgerald, who abstained from voting on the contact, said, “It delivers as advertised.”

In other Lake District news, the board voted to submit a final spillway design to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

“This is the perfect time to get working on it. The water level is low, it’s perfect timing,” said Migon, adding the Lake District also recommended the plans be filed.

Twin Lakes Village President Howard Skinner said the village should begin to solicit bids as soon as possible.
