Rockets hold on to better Antioch

By Todd Rohde~CORRESPONDENT

The Richmond-Burton boys’ soccer team knew coming into their contest Sept. 14th with Antioch that they would have their hands full against a competitive Sequoit team.

They were also aware of the fact that they would have to play up to their potentials and limit their mistakes if they were going to have a chance at coming out on top with a victory.

Well they were right about both assumptions and were able to accomplish just the task that they set out to by securing the win. The Rockets had just enough to slip past the Sequoits by a 2-1 margin in nonconference play at Richmond.

The victory improved the Rockets to 7-5-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play for the season, while the Sequoits slipped to 6-4-1 on the year.

“Right now I think that the team is playing well and really concentrating on the details, as we have a lot of young players playing in big roles” Rocket head coach Casey DeCaluwe said. “Sometimes they have responded well and in others, it has taken them some time to settle in. When we play with a bit of confidence, I feel like this team can beat anyone.”

The Rockets finally broke through within a defensive battle to erase a scoreless tie by scoring the first and only goal of the first half. They jumped out to a 1-0 advantage at the break, as senior midfielder Zack Cemail connected for his 13th goal of the season on an assisted pass from teammate Jacob McClanahan.

Knowing that the Sequoits were still within striking distance, the Rockets added an insurance goal midway through the second half to up their lead to 2-0. This time it was Frank Spicuzza finding the back of the net off of an assisted pass from Joey Sanborn.

The Sequoits did their best to get back into the contest and make a game of it, by reaching for a goal of their own late in the second half to slice the deficit to 2-1. But it wouldn’t be enough, as Richmond’s defense refused to break as they held on as time expired to seal the win.

The Rockets were out shot in the game 9-7, but Richmond goalie Luis Perez was able to save eight of the nine shots taken at him. Richmond made good on two of the seven shots that they directed at Antioch keeper Tommy Tritschler.

Rockets double up the Cogs

The Rockets took care of business earlier in the week, as they doubled up the Cogs 4-2 in Big Northern Conference play Sept. 12th at Richmond.

The Cogs got on the board first early in the contest to grab a 1-0 lead. Not to be outdone, the Rockets came right back to knot the score at 1-1 with a goal of their own about 10 minutes before the half and that where things stood at the break.

The Rockets would score three more unanswered goals midway through the second half to take a 4-1 advantage, before the Cogs netted a goal in closing minutes to make up the 4-2 final. What a day it was for Sanborn, as he finished with a hat trick by scoring three of the Rockets four goals including the goal-ahead one in the second half.

Perez finished the day by saving four of the six shots on goal that the Cogs took against him.

The Rockets non-conference game at Woodstock North from Sept. 17 was postponed and not rescheduled as of yet.
