Falcons on track with win over Case

Through the early part of the 2012 season, the Westosha Central boys volleyball squad has continued to search for the right combination.

It looks like the Falcons are on the right track.

Central improved to 3-0 in the Southeast Conference last week with a hard-fought 25-23, 16-25, 31-29, 25-22 win over visiting Racine Case.

The win was important, but just another step in a season-long process, Central coach Wayne Schultz said.

“It’s (being 3-0) a great start,” he said.

After the tight victory in the opening set, the Falcons fell by nine points in the second when Case went on the offensive, Schultz said.

“Case outplayed us,” he said. “We made a lot of unforced errors and gave them a chance to play well.”

Each of the last two games were close throughout, but the Falcons had enough to hang on for the win.

“They were both hard-fought games and were a lot of fun to coach and watch,” Schultz said. “We just kept making big plays when it mattered.”

Statistical leaders for the Falcons included Regan Hess with 12 digs and 22 kills; Mike Skora with nine kills and 13 digs; Glenn Karsten and Luke Werth with seven kills; Brooks Gahart with 14 digs, three aces and 35 assists; Nathan Manning with three aces; and Brent Larsen with three aces and 10 digs.

Central was back in action Monday against visiting Indian Trails Academy and Thursday at rival Burlington. The Falcons will compete Saturday at the Shorewood Invitational.

“We have a busy week,” Schultz said. “We will take one match at a time and try to keep getting better.”
