‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ to be performed this weekend

Johnsburg High School Theatre will perform “Arsenic and Old Lace” on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Johnsburg High School Duane Andreas Auditorium, 2002 West Ringwood Road.

The stage classic play is about the elderly Brewster sisters and their mission to give eternal happiness to as many elderly men as possible, or as many can fit in the cellar.

The play takes place in 1941 Brooklyn in the home of Abby Brewster, played by sophomore Chloe Hurckes and Martha Brewster, played by junior Maggie Liston, two wonderfully pleasant women permanently stuck in the Victorian age.

Living with them is their adult nephew, Teddy, played by Mitchell Kasprzyk, who is thoroughly convinced he is Teddy Roosevelt. New York theatre critic, Mortimer Brewster, played by senior Jon Hanrahan is newly engaged to the free spirited Elaine, played by freshman Nicole Spears, when he discovers what his aunts are up to (twelve).

Soon after, the Brewsters are confronted with the return of the maniacally sadistic prodigal older brother Jonathan, played by senior Nate Bjorge, who, thanks to the fine surgical work of Dr. Einstein, played by senior Art Copeland, shows a striking resemblance to Boris Karloff.

The play, written by Joseph Kesselring, is a perfect farce, with hilarious turns between murder and mayhem.

The cast also includes seniors Sam Wagner, Stephen Vazquez, Frank Taormina, junior Jesse Reitz, sophomores Erin Rooney, Sophia Heiser, and Nick Romero, and freshmen Jacquelyn Traughber and Erin Liston.

Sophomore Jenny Hanrahan is the Student Director. Molly Peters, Christina Fouke, Jamie Uthe, Kevin Duffy, and Paul Hanrahan make up the production staff.

Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.
