Westosha sweeps team titles at SLC meet

Quite simply put, it was dominance in its purest form Saturday morning at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside National Cross Country Course.

The Westosha Central boys and girls cross country teams took the top two places in both the boys and girls individual races, and routed the rest of the field in the team race at the Southern Lakes Conference cross country meet.

Because of impending bad weather, officials combined both the varsity and junior varsity races for both the boys and the girls.

Even with more runners on the course, it didn’t seem to phase the Falcons. With cross country meets determined by placing and the lowest number of total points winning, the minimum points any team can score is 15.

The Westosha boys scored 23, beating Badger (59) and Waterford (76), while the Westosha girls scored (20) – well ahead of Badger (79) and Burlington (99).

In the boys varsity race, senior Tyler Fiebelkorn posted a time of 16 minutes, 28.3 second on the 5K course to win, beating teammate Shane McNealy, who was second in 16:31.2.

Jacob Hebior was fifth in 16:55.9, Charles Lamp seventh in 17:00.7 and Grant MacKinnon eight in 17:09.8 to round out the Westosha scorers.

On the girls side, sophomores Melissa Capra and Maria Sabourin went 1-2, with Capra running a 15:35.4 on the 4K course and Sabourin racing past Union Grove’s Maddie Schwartz at the finish with a 15:39.6.

Joaanne Reiners was fourth in 15:42.9, MacKenzie Bevry sixth in 15:%1.9 and Renee Culbertson seventh in 16:01.4 to round out the scorers.

The Wilmot girls, meanwhile, led by a 10th-place finish by Kallen Crowe in 16:15.1, took fifth.

Kirsten Clayton took 21st for the Panthers in 16:29.2, Gwenna Yakes 24th in 16:36.1, Lindsey Clayton 28th in 16:48.8 and Heaven Podgorski  40th in 17:40.9 to round out the Wilmot scoring.

The Wilmot boys were eighth of the eight teams in the meet. The top finish for the Panthers came from Matt Wagemann, who was 32nd in 18:26.5.

Other scoring runners for Wilmot were Chandler Burns in 37th (18:56), Karter Crowe in 42nd (19:44.4), Truman Slocum in 47th (20:10.6) and Lucas Phillips in 49th (20:14.3).
