Lady Sequoits look to be competitive out on the court

“Our strengths will be our ability to play together as a team as well as our overall shooting and rebounding abilities.” Sequoit Head Coach Tim Borries

The Antioch girls basketball team is coming off of a pretty productive and successful season from a year ago, and they look to continue to feed off of and build on that positive momentum once again.

If everything falls into place and goes as planned, then the Lady Sequoits look to be competitive out on the court this season.

“I look for us to be very competitive once again this year, as long as we give it our maximum effort on each and every possession,” Sequoit head coach Tim Borries said.

Antioch finished 15-14 overall last year, but put together a pretty impressive 10-4 mark in conference play. Their season came to an end in the regional championship, where they fell to the eventual state runner-up in Vernon Hills.

The Lady Sequoits do have some holes to fill after losing four of their starters to graduation, but they have some promising talent looking to step into those open roles.

There are 15 girls out for the varsity program including six seniors, seven juniors and one sophomore and freshman with the lone returning starter in Megan Borries serving as the team captain.

“My goal or key for the season is to have my players put forth their best efforts every second that they are on the court,” Borries said. “If we repeat with 10 wins again in the conference and attain 18 victories overall, then I would say that it would be a very successful season.”

The Sequoits will be looking for some big things from senior Borries at guard, junior guard Paige Gallimore and junior forward Alexandra Fracek and senior forward Abigail McIlhany. Borries led the team in scoring last year with 10.2 points a game, Gallimore was third in scoring with 6.3 points and fourth in rebounds with five and at 5’10” Fracek was second on the team in grabbing boards with 6.5 a contest.

Antioch is hoping that they can be a force within the conference again this year by finishing in the top three spots. Teams most likely to give them a run for their money will be Vernon Hills and Lakes Area.

“Our strengths will be our ability to play together as a team as well as our overall shooting and rebounding abilities,” Borries said.

“One area that we will need to work on is staying focused for the entire game by limiting the mental lapses when fatigue sets in.”

The Sequoits began practicing Nov. 1st and things have been looking up for them so far, as the girls have been working hard and are eager to learn. This is Borries 17th season coaching at Antioch including 12 years at the freshman and sophomore levels as well as five years at the helm of the varsity.

Two things in particular have really helped build and improve the girls’ basketball program over the years at Antioch. The first one is participating in the Dick Baumgartner Shooting Camp and secondly working with the feeder school program and preparing them for the next level of play.
