Antioch girls prevail, boys fall on the court

By Todd Rohde~CORRESPONDENT

The Antioch boys and girls basketball teams both took to the court this past weekend, but unfortunately had different outcomes including one for the better and the other not so much.

The experienced and confident girls program prevailed for a victory, while the youthful and still learning and growing boys’ team had to settle for a defeat despite putting forth a valiant effort.

The Lady Sequoits were the recipient of a comfortable 56-37 North Suburban Conference victory over Round Lake Jan. 25, while the Antioch boys team fell to rival Lakes Area 64-29 in NSC play as both games were played at home in Antioch.

The victory improved the girls to 15-8 overall and 6-2 in league play for the season, while the boys dropped to 2-17 and 1-7 on the year.

“We came out with a lot of intensity to control the tempo of the game, as I was happy with the girls performance,” Antioch girls’ head coach Tim Borries said. “We did a great job of spreading the ball around on offense and especially from a rebounding standpoint.”

Rebounding was a pivotal difference in the game, as the Lady Sequoits pulled down an incredible 64 in the contest including many of which were on the offensive end and that led to many extra opportunities to score. A balanced scoring attack was also a key, as Antioch had five different girls reach for six or more points in the showdown.

After clinging to a slim 10-8 lead through a quarter of play, the Sequoits really turned up the heat in the second quarter. That’s when Antioch went on a scoring frenzy to outscore the Panthers by a hefty 22-8 margin to double up the Panthers by a 32-16 margin at the half.

This would wind up being the quarter of play that would go on to make up the difference in the game. That’s because second two quarters of play would go onto be pretty evenly played and close, as the two teams matched each other in a back and forth battle.

On the night, Antioch made 22 field goals including six from three-point range to go along with making six of their 13 free throws. Alex Fracek led the Sequoits with a team high 13 points and also came up with 24 boards including 18 of them being on offense.

Megan Borries had nine of both points (all of which were treys) and rebounds and four assists, as Paige Gallamore dished in nine points, Carly McCameron finished with eight points and seven rebounds as Abby Augustin contributed eight boards and Abbi McIhany had six points.

“We were able to stay in the game early on with physical defense and solid rebounding to hold the Eagles to 24 first-half points,” Antioch boys head coach Jim White said.  “However they came out a more focused team in the seconnd half and were able to pull away, as we shot only 27 percent from the floor and were just 3-9 from the foul line in the game..

Antioch fell behind 11-5 through the first quarter of play and trailed 24-13 at the half. The Eagles then went on to rack up 19 points in each of the third and fourth quarters, which were more than the Sequoits scored in the final 16 minutes of play combined.

The Sequoits were once again led by Tyler Innis on with 14 points and four rebounds, as Tim Palmer finished with eight points and three boards.  Junior Sam Smithson and senior Cody Gwinn also combined for eight rebounds, three assists and two steals on the night.
