Gymnasts take seventh at Spartan Invite

In spite of competing without one of its top gymnastics, the Westosha/Union Grove gymnastics team still had plenty of positives Saturday at the Spartan Invite.

Competing in the green division – the top-seeded division – the team posted a team score of 132.075, which was seventh of seven teams in the division.

Franklin Combined and Burlington – the top two teams in the state right now – dominated the meet, finishing first and second, respectively, more than 10 points ahead of the rest of the field with scores of 147.725 and 147.70.

Westosha coach Bill Price had expected the team score to drop lower, but said the team did a nice job filling in around the absence of Sydney Rau, who was gone at another commitment.

“Patience Spinler finally did all-around … (and) along with the other girls who stepped in for Sydney, we had a decent meet for ourselves,” Price said.

Spinler wasn’t the only athlete returning to the all-around. Fellow senior Aslyn Wolcott also performed in the all-around.

“(It) was a nice ending for them at their final Spartan Invite,” Price said.

The top 10 gymnasts on each event medaled, and Wolcott finished eighth in the all-around (34.675) and Spinler ninth (34.400).

While the Falcons didn’t medal on any individual event, Spinler finished 12th on vault with an 8.95 and Wolcvott 13th with an 8.925, Spinler 13th on bars with an 8.6 and Wolcott 15th with an 8.50, Wolcott 11th on beam (8.85) and Spinler 17th on floor with an 8.55.

Price also complimented the work of Lexie Biggs, Ashley Derflinger, Alex Reeves and Jordan Bruley in helping the team break the 132-point mark.

On Jan. 24, the team dropped a 140.175-131.075 to Mukwonago/Kettle Moraine in a non-conference dual meet.

Wolcott won the uneven bars with a 9.05, finished third on floor with an 8.875, and second in the all-around with a 33.975.
