Costume ball comes to downtown Kenosha

On Friday, Nov. 25 from 5 to 9 p.m., everyone is invited to attend Pandora’s Ball, a free costume ball, featuring music, dance, storytelling, and poetry. The ball will take place in the lobby of the Rhode Center for the Arts, located at 514 56th Street in Kenosha. It coincides with Lightin’ Up Kenosha activities at other shops, stores, galleries, and cafes in the downtown and lakefront areas, welcoming the holiday season.

Pandora’s Ball will feature performances by Voices and Verses, a music and multi-media ensemble; Brent Mitchell, singer/songwriter and guitarist; Laurenzi Dance, modern dance troupe; Ed Godula and Raylene Bernotat of RG Productions, a vocal acting troupe; Out of the Box Players, featuring music by drums, didgeridoo, flute, and percussion instruments; and Dylan Zocchi and Nick Webb, creating psych noise and strange beats that both disturb and delight.

Refreshments will be served. The event will host a costume contest for people ages 13 and older. Costumes should reflect a theme of mythology, legends, tall tales, and folklore, using the contestant’s imagination as a guide. Grand prize for this contest is $100. Additional prizes will be awarded. Register on the day of event at the Rhode Center for the Arts. Contest guidelines are posted at www.southportpress.com.

Pandora’s Ball is a celebration of the publication of Pandora’s Box, a limited edition collection. Many Kenosha area artists and authors, as well as international artists, took part in the creation of Pandora’s Box, inspired, albeit with a twist, by the mythological tale of the woman who gave in to temptation and unleashed evil upon the world.

Southport Press, a small-press publishing opportunity for Kenosha area artists and authors, reports that it found Pandora’s almost-empty container (only Hope remained inside) and filled it with goodness, including treasures that include a lavishly illustrated and creatively written book of myths, legends, tall tales, and folklore, as interpreted by local and international artists and authors, a compact disc of auditory delights, and assorted pieces of visual art, including original art and craft items.

This limited edition Pandora’s Box collection will be for sale at this event.
