Four members of the Westosha Central girls volleyball team and one from Wilmot recently received All-Southern Lakes Conference recognition.

Central placed two girls on first team, junior right-side/setter Lauren Hickson and senior outside hitter Jenna Jehlicka.

They were joined on the second team by sophomore Maria Rasch (middle blocker) and sophomore Danielle Rampart, who was named honorable mention.

Representing Wilmot was junior Sarah Vozel, who was named honorable mention.

This year’s SLC Player of the Year was Union Grove senior Kassidy Jo Wilks.

Hickson had a standout season for the Falcons and will be counted on to repeat that effort again next year, Central coach Charlie Berg said.

“If we could kind of insert her attitude and feistiness into everybody, we would probably be right up there for a conference championship or maybe a state tournament,” he said.

“There’s no substitution for her energy, her energy and the enthusiasm that she plays with all the time.”

Hickson also was named the team’s most valuable player, as voted on by her teammates.

Berg is excited to see what she can do next year.

“She’s just a good kid to have coming back,” he said. “It will probably be her leadership next year that will kind of (determine) where we end up. You can’t coach a lot of the things she does.

“I’m hoping that’s going to be a springboard for the rest of our kids to follow next year.”

Jehlicka rebounded from a bit of a disappointing junior year, Berg said, as she seemed to bring a lot more aggressiveness to the court.

“She kind of let it all out and played with the aggressive style that we needed her to play,” he said. “At the end of the season, she was playing with a lot of confidence.

“She’s a good, solid worker. She played some back row for us and did a good job. She’s a coachable girl who worked hard.”

In Rasch and Rampart, the Falcons have two girls with two more seasons left and plenty of room to grow, their coach said.

“In the next couple years, (Rasch) will really come into her own,” Berg said. “She’s knowledgeable, she’s running routes faster and finding out what it takes to be a varsity middle. She’s a quick learner. It’s going to come, and I’m looking forward to working with her.

“Danielle in a lot of ways is a early Jena Berg. She’s multi-faceted in terms of the things she can do. … We just have to find where she’s going to be able to give us the most strength. She’s a real neat kid to coach.”

Wilmot coach Lindsay Gruber was unavailable for comment before press time.
