Westosha baseball splits contests against Elkhorn

A two-game series with Elkhorn proved to be a good news, bad news proposition last week for the Westosha Central baseball team.

The good news came in the opener May 6, as the Falcons pulled out a 5-2 victory – but just 24 hours later, the Elks gained a measure of revenge with an 11-9 win of their own.

With the split, the Falcons took a 6-9 overall record and a 4-5 Southern Lakes Conference mark into play this week. Central hosted Wilmot Monday afternoon, but results were unavailable by press time.

The second game with Elkhorn was a back-and-forth affair from the start.

Elkhorn jumped out to a 4-0 lead after just one inning and extended that to 6-3 after three innings before Central put together a rally.

The Falcons scored twice in the fourth, three times in the fifth and once more in the sixth to take a 9-6 advantage.

But it wouldn’t be enough, as the Elks answered with a five-run outburst in the sixth inning to account for the final score.

Justin Barney led the Falcons with two hits and four RBI, followed by Chris Frackowiak with three hits, two runs and one RBI. Steve Bailitz added two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Barney took the loss in relief, as he walked two and struck out one in two innings. Tyler Sorensen started the game and struck out five batters in four innings.

In the opener, the Falcons avoided disaster in the top of the seventh inning, as the Elks loaded the bases with two outs.

But Central starter James Gorsline, who went the distance, forced a ground out to end the threat and the game.

Gorsline allowed six hits, a walk and struck out four to earn the victory.

Marshall Gilbert, Barney and Greg Kuhfuss each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Panthers. Gilbert put the Falcons on the scoreboard with a run-scoring single in the first to drive in Barney, who had doubled.

Central traveled to Delavan Tuesday afternoon and hosted Burlington Thursday. The Falcons will host Indian Trails Academy Saturday, May 18, in a non-conference matchup.
