Lady Rockets defeat Harvard twice, but drop a pair to Zion

It was kind of a roller coaster week for the Richmond-Burton softball team, as they had some mixed results depending on which team they were playing.

The Lady Rockets began the week by defeating rival Harvard twice within three days on the diamond, but then dropped a pair of showings to Zion-Benton later in the week on the same day.

The Lady Rockets got things rolling in a positive direction by first knocking off the Hornets by a 10-2 margin in Big Northern Conference action May 15th in Richmond. After the Rockets play this week, their overall record sits at 11-13 and they are in third place in the league standings at 6-6.

Haylea Hoskins picked up the complete-game victory for the Rockets on the mound, as she kept the Hornets’ offense off balanced. She was responsible for allowing just two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk over seven innings of work.

Despite committing four errors in the field, the Rockets were able to overcome their miscues at the plate with the bats. Richmond pounded out 11 hits on the day including seven of them going for extra bases as they made the most of their scoring opportunities.

The Rockets scored early and often in the game, as they plated runs in every inning except the second. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first, Richmond continued to pour it on and put the game away by adding three more runs in both the third and fifth to go along with a solo run in the fourth and a pair in the sixth.

Leading the way for the Rockets were Meagan Spohr with three hits and Katie Kroll and Sam Dahlen with two apiece. Spohr produced a pair of triples, a double and three RBIS, Kroll homered, doubled and knocked in two as Dahlen added two singles and scored twice.

The Rockets repeated the same favor by defeating the Hornets again just two days later by a 9-3 difference in BNC play May 17th at Harvard. Emma Fionda proved to be the thorn in the Hornets side in this game, as she made her presence felt both at the plate and on the mound.

Fionda pitched the win as she gave three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over seven innings. She also helped her own cause with the bat by coming up with three hits, scoring twice and having an RBI.

As a team, Richmond pounded out 17 hits on the day as everyone in the lineup found a way to get on base. The Rockets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back, as they added three insurance runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Also helping out offensively were Grace Schwegel had three hits, a run and an RBI on the day, as Spohr dished in a pair of doubles and McKenna Wegner finished with a pair of RBIs.

The Rockets closed out the week by dropping a pair of nonconference games as part of doubleheader action May 18th at Zion-Benton. Richmond was doubled by a 4-2 difference in the opener to the Zee Bees, before being handed a 12-2 loss in the nightcap.

No other information, statistics or highlights of the above games were made available to the paper at the time of print.
