Fonk highlights 2013 All-SLC softball team

It should come as no surprise to see several members of the Westosha Central softball team on this year’s All-Southern Lakes Conference list.

The Falcons dominated the competition all spring – one that ended with the Division 1 state title last week – and the SLC coaches took notice.

Central, which finished at 14-0 in the SLC and 23-1 overall, landed eight girls on the three all-conference lists, including this year’s Athlete of the Year, senior pitcher Sarah Fonk.

Fonk, who received the most votes by the coaches, was joined on the first team by freshman Kayla Konwent (infielder), senior Brittany Blazich (infielder), junior Taylor Bergles (outfielder) and junior Larkin Langston (infielder).

Named to the second team were junior Liz Fonk (catcher) and senior Maggie McMullin (infielder), while junior Hailey Jester (infielder) was named honorable mention.

Sarah Fonk, who is headed to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall as a preferred walk on, posted a perfect 18-0 record in the pitcher’s circle.

In 108 2-3 innings, Fonk allowed 46 hits, just five earned runs, seven walks and struck out 188. She had an earned run average of 0.32.

At the plate, Fonk batted .460 (40 for 87), with 40 runs scored, five doubles, six triples, two home runs and 27 RBI.

Konwent burst onto the scene in 2013 and was a force all spring for the Falcons.

For the year, she batted a team-high .541 (40 for 74), with 33 runs scored, six doubles, one triple and 11 home runs – including two at the state tournament. She also drove in a team-high 42 runs.

The speedy Blazich, who jump started the Falcons in their 12-1 state title victory over Kenosha Bradford, batted .511 in her final high school campaign (48 for 94). She also led the team in runs scored with 44 and in stolen bases with 17.

Bergles batted .460 this spring (40 for 87), with 37 runs scored, six doubles, eight triples, two home runs and 39 RBI. She also had six stolen bases.

The Falcons’ fifth first-team selection, Langston, batted .446 (33 for 74), with 41 runs scored, seven doubles, 27 RBI and five stolen bases.

Both of Central’s second-team picks, Liz Fonk and McMullin, also batted at better than a .400 clip for the spring.

Liz Fonk finished at .413 (31 for 75), with 17 runs scored, two doubles and 19 RBI, while McMullin batted .522 (35 for 67), with 14 runs scored, four doubles, two home runs and 28 RBI.

Jester appeared in 22 of the Falcons’ 24 games and batted .350 (21 for 60), with 14 runs scored, four doubles and 11 RBI.
