Blue Devils pick up victory in home game

When it comes to the way the defense is playing, Southern Lakes Blue Devils coach Tom Hawkins is pleased.

Now if his offense could just manage to score a few more points.

The Blue Devils scored two touchdowns – one offensive, one essentially defensive – Saturday in a 16-0 win over the Jefferson Scorpions at Westosha Central High School.

It was the final regular-season home game of the summer for the Blue Devils, who have locked up an Ironman Football League playoff spot.

But Hawkins wasn’t satisfied with Saturday’s effort.

“Our defense, great job again,” Hawkins said. “Offensively, definitely not getting the job done.

“We have to go back to the drawing board this week.”

The Blue Devils took a hit before the game even began. Leading rusher Robert Jones was involved in a car accident last week, and while he was not seriously injured, wasn’t available to play.

Adrian Davis, a former Kenosha St. Joseph standout, made it back into uniform for the first time in three years, and finished with eight runs for about 65 yards.

“He played pretty good,” Hawkins said. “Adrian came in at just the right time.”

The Blue Devils got on the board in the first quarter when quarterback Chris Calhoun connected with Antonio Parham for a 65-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead.

But the Blue Devils would be kept off the board from there until midway through the third quarter. After getting a safety against the Scorpions, the resulting free kick went to Jaleel Johnson, who ran it back more than 50 yards for a touchdown.

The extra point gave the Blue Devils their final margin of victory.

“He pretty much broke several tackles and had good blocking downfield,” Hawkins said of Johnson, who also had an interception. “He was making some moves out there.”

The Blue Devils travel to Milton Saturday to play the Rock County Rage.

The Rage beat the Hurricane 55-19 last weekend to remain unbeaten, while the Blue Devils are 6-2.

Hawkins said the feel of the game will depend on how seriously the Rage take the contest.

“It’s hard to say how serious everyone is going to take the game,” Hawkins said. “It’s one of those games … both teams are locked in their position for the playoffs, so it doesn’t really matter what happens.”
