Huge second quarter lifts Woodstock past Johnsburg

Coming off of their first victory in 25 games a week ago, the Johnsburg football team was hoping that they could carry that momentum and intensity over into this week and make it two straight.

But unfortunately their opponent in Woodstock had other plans of their own, as they were determined to capture their inaugural win of the season.

By the time that it was all said and done, it was the Blue Streaks that got their way by using a huge second-quarter explosion to come away victorious. That’s when Woodstock scored 28 unanswered points during the 12-minute stretch, to defeat the Skyhawks 47-21 in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division play Oct. 4th at Johnsburg.

The loss dropped the Skyhawks to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in league play for the year. The win was the first of the season for the Blue Streaks, as they moved to 1-5 and 1-2.

The big difference in the game was the Skyhawks inability to contain Woodstock’s passing game and prevent giving up the big plays. The Blue Streak could do no wrong on offense, as they racked up 491 total yards on the night including a hefty 344 of them coming through the air attack.

The Blue Streaks got on the board first, as they scored on their opening possession to jump out to a 7-0 lead at the 8:01 mark of the first quarter. After converting on a fourth down attempt, Woodstock quarterback Alan Hafer found receiver Jordan Sumner for a five-yard touchdown completion.

The real troubles for the Skyhawks though came in the second quarter, as the Blue Streaks scored four more touchdowns during the stretch and put the game out of reach by padding their lead to 35-7 at the half. A pair of one-yard runs to go along with TD receptions of 86 and 19 yards accounted for the scoring for the Blue Streaks.

Johnsburg was able to put some points on the board in the second quarter with a touchdown of their own with just over four minutes left in the half, but they still had their work cut out for them in the second half.

Junior quarterback Nick Brengman took it across the goal line for the score from the five-yard line on a keeper play for the Skyhawks.

Despite having their backs up against the wall, the Skyhawks came out with some enthusiasm in the set half to make some noise and make things interesting for a bit. They did so by finding the end zone on back to back possessions to slice the deficit to 35-21 with four minutes left in the third.

Brengman threaded the ball into the hands of Brad Iverson out of the backfield for a 19-yard scoring strike. Zach MacKenzie accounted for the other touchdown on a five-yard run.

That’s as close as things would get though as the Blue Streaks would add a pair of touchdowns in each of the final quarters, while keeping the Skyhawks scoreless the rest of the way out. Johnsburg was sparked by the play of Brengman, who rushed for 118 yards on 18 carries and completed 11 of his 29 pass attempts for another 149 yards including three of them going to Iverson for 78 yards.

Woodstock was led by Hafer making good on 18 of his 26 passes for 344 yards including four touchdowns and no interceptions. His main target was receiver John Kruse, who caught seven balls for 180 yards as Mitch Kohley also added 109 yards on five catches.
