The Westosha Central boys volleyball team is starting to build a little momentum.
Central put together two straight workmanlike efforts in the past week and came away with a pair of Southeast Conference victories.
The Falcons opened play last week with a 25-14, 25-11, 25-22 win at Indian Trails Academy, followed by a 25-13, 25-22, 25-19 sweep Oct. 10 over visiting Kenosha Bradford.
Central returned to action Monday night at Racine Case. Results were unavailable by press time.
After a fast start against Bradford in the second match of the week, the Falcons had to grind things out a bit to complete the three-set win, Central coach Wayne Schultz said.
“We played solid and did what we had to do to get a win,” he said.
“(The) first game, we passed extremely well, which got our offense going.”
Statistical leaders for the Falcons were Jordan Easthon with 11 kills; Glenn Karsten with nine kills and three blocks; Mike Skora with seven kills; Kyle Foulke with six kills and three aces; Aaron Cliffton with four digs; and Jordan Meyers with three aces.
Central again started quickly against Indian Trails with a pair of easy victories before the Hawks rallied a bit in the third set.
Fortunately for the Falcons, they righted the ship and ended the night without having to play a fourth set.
“It was a solid night with the whole roster getting a chance to contribute,” Schultz said. “We ran into a slight issue in the third set and were down 19-16 when Mike Skora took over offensively.”
Skora recorded kills on seven of the Panthers’ last nine points.
“He got hot and (setter) Brooks (Gahart) kept feeding him the ball,” Schultz said.
Skora led the way with 15 kills and four aces, followed by Karsten with 12 kills; Gahart with 36 assists, eight digs, three aces and three blocks; Easthon with 13 digs; and Jon Satterson with four
blocks.
Central returns to action Saturday, Oct. 19, when it hosts its own invitational at 9 a.m. Joining the Falcons are South Milwaukee, Muskego, Brookfield Central, Waukesha West and Catholic Memorial.
Schultz said he’s looking forward to seeing what his team can do against some top-notch competition.
“We will get a chance to play some of the top teams in the state,” he said. “It is a round-robin format, so we will get to play everyone.
We will get some great tests on Saturday to see where we are at as the season nears the end.
