Gymnasts take sixth at Nordy

Injury and illness bugs continue to plague the Wes-tosha Central-Union Grove gymnastics team.

But that hasn’t stopped other gymnasts from stepping up their game and doing what they can to help the cause.

Central posted a team score of 131.225, good for sixth place overall at the always-competitive Nordentoft Invitational Feb. 15 at Mukwonago.

Franklin Combined won the team title with a 149.350, followed by Burlington with a 146.775 and Mukwonago-Kettle Moraine with a 142.950.

“With two-thirds of our top scores basically on the bench, I was surprised that we scored over 130 with our young freshmen,” Central coach Bill Price said. “(It was a) great team effort by all of our girls.”

Devan Green led the Fal-cons with an 11th-place finish in the all-around (34.450). Green was 16th on the vault (8.750), 34th on the uneven bars (7.700), 11th on the beam (8.900) and 13th on the floor (9.100).

The other top all-around effort came from Madi Hansen, who was 16th (32.475). Hansen finished 27th on the vault (8.300), 20th on the bars (8.350), 29th on the beam (7.800) and 32nd on the floor (8.025).

Biggs was held out of the first three events after Price said she developed a fever the previous night.

“She was completely drained of energy,” he said. “We allowed her to do her best event and our last event after she got a little better, and she had a pretty good performance.”

Central is back in action Friday afternoon when it hosts the SLC Meet, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Delavan edges Lady Falcons

A tough call by the official went against the Central girls Feb. 14 in a 60-59 SLC loss at Delavan-Darien.

The loss dropped Central to 5-13 overall and 1-10 in conference play.

“I really felt like some players got away with things and we couldn’t catch a break,” Central coach Jerod Boyd said. “It comes down to making timely shots, and we haven’t proven we can do that yet.”

Central trailed 28-23 at halftime but outscored the Comets 14-8 in the third peri-od to take a one-point lead into the final eight minutes.

Working the ball into the post was a big factor all night, Boyd said.

“We were making shots in the third quarter, which always helps,” he said. “We were able to get 50-plus paint touches, which has been our focus offensively.”

Jaela McGill led the Fal-cons with 16 points, followed by Megan Ziesmann with 15 and Madi Stanczak with 10.

Central opened the week with a 66-38 loss Feb. 11 to rival Wilmot.

The key in that one was easy, and that was Wilmot’s standout senior Kari Clements, who poured in 30 points.

“Kari shot the lights out,” Boyd said. “We had hands in her face and couldn’t stop her offensive game.”

Wilmot led 21-9 after the first quarter and 35-21 by halftime. The Panthers in-creased their advantage in the third quarter to 21 points and never looked back.

McGill led the way with 14 points, followed by Stanczak with eight and Brienna Bostanche with six.

Central travels to Waterford to face the Wolverines Friday at 7 p.m.

Boys fall to Comets

A 15-10 second quarter by host Delavan-Darien Feb. 7 proved to be the difference in the Comets’ 52-49 win over the Central boys.

Delavan, which led 27-23 at halftime, drained eight 3-pointers in the contest.

Ben Graveley led the Fal-cons (6-12 overall, 3-9 SLC) with 15 points, followed by Ron Hall with 12, Glenn Karsten with six and Kyle Foulke with five.

Central traveled to Water-ford Tuesday night and hosted Union Grove in the SLC finale Thursday. The Falcons close out their regular season Saturday at Shoreland Lutheran, followed by a WIAA Division 2 regional opener next Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Greendale.

The winner of that contest travels to Wilmot Friday, Feb. 28.
