Three Falcons grace all-conference squad

The Westosha Central basketball team recently landed three players on the All-Southern Lakes Conference teams.

Junior Jaela McGill was a second-team pick, while junior teammate Madi Stanczak was named honorable mention. On the boys’ side, senior Glenn Karsten was named honorable mention.

The Central girls team posted a 7-16 overall record under first-year coach Jerod Boyd. The Falcons were 2-12 in the SLC.

McGill led the Falcons in scoring with 240 points (12 per game) and in 3-pointers with 32. She also made 34 free throws, good for second on the squad.

“(Jaela) was our leading scorer and who we looked to when we needed a basket,” Boyd said. “She matured throughout the season, becoming a more versatile player than just a scorer.

“She was second on our team in steals and second in assists. The ball had to go through her.”

Stanczak finished the year with 200 points (9.5 per game), second behind McGill. Stanczak also made 24 free throw and 16 3-pointers.

“Madi has a very good season on average,” Boyd said. “She could be inconsistent in her scoring at times, but was always playing hard.

“She has the capability to be a great player. It’s going to take a hard-working off-season to fine tune some things.”

Boyd said he has high expectations for Stanczak’s senior year.

“I will expect Madi to be-come more consistent,” he said.

Boyd said he enjoyed his first year as a varsity head coach after several seasons at the JV level at Burlington, where he still teaches.

Now that his rookie season is in the books, it’s time to look ahead to next year.

And that work begins right now.

“My first year was every-thing I dreamed of,” Boyd said. “I can’t believe they pay me to do this stuff.

“I enjoyed watching the girls grow as players and as people. It went by extremely fast, and now that I have had some time to reflect, I can’t wait to get back at it. I already have ideas on some different things I’m going to try. Overall, it was a great experience, and I am blessed to get this opportunity.”

Boyd, who was hired last summer, said he hopes to have more specific plans in place for his returning girls as they prepare for the 2014-15 campaign.

Statistics for Karsten were available only through 17 games. In that time, he scored 169 points (9.9 per game), second behind junior Ben Graveley. Karsten also was second in made free throws with 25 and in field goals with 64.

Central was 6-16 overall this season, including a 3-11 mark in the SLC.
