The Westosha Central baseball team got the 2014 season off to a good start Saturday morning.

Central swept visiting Shoreland Lutheran, with a 13-3, five-inning win in the opener, followed by a 3-0 shutout in the nightcap.

The Falcons (2-0 overall) opened Southern Lakes Conference action Tuesday after-noon against visiting Burling-ton. Central travels to Burling-ton Thursday.

“I was very pleased with the way we played on Satur-day,” Central coach Jacob Morman said. “With limited field practice time due to the weather, our guys were pre-pared and really did a nice job all-around.”

Central scored in four of its five at bats to cruise to the 10-run win in the first game. The Falcons led 6-3 after two innings before they broke things open with four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

Corey Hauser had two hits and three runs scored, fol-lowed by Justin Barney with two doubles and four runs scored and Jake Buthman with two hits, including a double. Marshall Gilbert added a triple, two runs scored and three RBI.

Barney picked up the complete-game win, as he allowed three hits, three earned runs, three walks and struck out four in five innings of work.

“Justin really settled in after the first two innings,” Morman said.

The story in the second game was Gilbert on the mound, as he allowed just one hit, two walks and struck out seven in seven innings of work.

Gilbert added three hits, including a double and a triple, a run scored and an RBI.

“The second game was re-ally about Marshall Gilbert on the mound and at the plate,” Morman said.

Barney added two hits, including a double and a triple, and a run scored, while Brooks Gahart and Hauser each drove in runs. Luke Blair added a double and a run scored.

Soccer girls wins opener

The Central girls soccer team opened its season April 3 with a hard-fought 1-0 non-conference win over visiting Beloit Memorial.

Cameron Wienke provided all the offense the Falcons would need with a goal 42 minutes into the match off an assist by Evy Swatkowski.

Cheneye Grant had four saves in the win for the Fal-cons.

Central is back in action Thursday night when it travels to Racine Horlick for a non-conference matchup with the Rebels.

Softball has busy week

After more than a week off, the Central softball team got back into action Tuesday afternoon at rival Wilmot in the Southern Lakes Conference opener for both teams.

Central (0-2 overall) hosts Union Grove Thursday after-noon before it travels to Mauston this weekend to compete in a two-day tournament.
