Panthers still perfect in SLC

Before the 2014 season began, it appeared the Wilmot baseball team had plenty of reasons for optimism.

It’s still early, but the Panthers are living up to that billing.

Wilmot stayed perfect in the Southern Lakes Conference last week with a doubleheader sweep at Elkhorn. The Panthers (7-1 overall, 4-0 SLC) posted victories of 6-2 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.

The Panthers were back in action Wednesday afternoon with a nonconference contest at Racine Park. Results were unavailable by press time.

In the opening game with Elkhorn, the Panthers saw a lead disappear in the bottom of the sixth inning when the hosts knotted the game at 2-2.

But in the seventh, the Panthers bounced back with the game-winning run on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Nick Van Kampen.

On the play, an errant throw by Elkhorn allowed Garrett Bogucki, who singled, and Dustin McFarlane, who was hit by a pitch, to score. Wilmot added two more runs on a single by John Cashin and another suicide squeeze bunt, this time by Kyle Nixon.
