For the first time since a pair of losses to open the season, the Westosha Central softball team found itself in a tight battle Saturday.

But once again, the Falcons turned to the talented bat of sophomore Kayla Konwent to make a big difference.

Konwent delivered a mammoth two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Falcons past Racine Case 2-0 in the second round of the Western Kenosha County Invitational.

Westosha, the state’s top-ranked Division 1 team and the defending state champion, won the opener 9-4 over Zion-Benton (Ill.) and the final 12-2 over rival Wilmot later Saturday.

Coverage of the title contest appears elsewhere in this edition.

Against Case, Konwent’s blast, which scored Taylor Bergles, was all the offense freshman pitcher Alyssa Hrncar would need.

Hrncar went the distance, and allowed just three hits, two walks and struck out two.

Central scored in its first three at bats in the opener with Zion-Benton. The Falcons led 4-2 after two innings before they broke the game open with four runs in the top of the third inning.

Haley Spoerl led the offense with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI, followed by Larkin Langston with two hits and Hailey Jester with two hits and two runs scored.

Freshman pitcher Olivia Klean worked 4-1/3 innings, and allowed four hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out one. Hrncar pitched 2-2/3 innings, and allowed two hits, an earned run and struck out two.

Central opened the week with a 22-2 Southern Lakes Conference thumping of host Badger.

The Falcons led 11-0 after three innings and doubled that output in the fourth inning to cruise to the five-inning win.

Golfers fifth at Milton

The Westosha Central boys golf team posted a score of 235, good for fifth overall at Saturday’s Milton Best Ball Tournament.

Lodi won the team title with a 205.

The team of Jonah Arbet and Bailey Menarez led the way with a seventh-place score of 69, followed by Zach Kramer and Kevin Lourigan with a 77 and Mike Skora and Sam Sekany with an 89.

Earlier in the week, the golfers finished fifth with a 136 at the Westosha Central Invitational. The team of Arbet and Menarez led the way with a 42.

Central was back in action Tuesday with an SLC dual meet at Union Grove. The Falcons host the Brightondale Invitational Saturday.

Soccer falls to Indian Trails

The Westosha Central girls soccer team tied the game at the 52nd minute, but visiting Indian Trails Academy scored the winning goal six minutes later en route to a 2-1 non-conference win April 16.

Central goalie Cheyenne Grant had nine saves for the Falcons.

The Falcons are off this week and back in action April 29 when they host Elkhorn.
