Richard Bong State Recreation Area announces May schedule of events

      • Saturday, May 3

    Wild Wisconsin. Kohl’s Wild Theater presented by Kohl’s Cares and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee performs on stage at the park. Learn about the animals found right in your own backyard. Detective Appletree stars in “The Mysterious Case of the Disappearing Bees” then join the Wisconsin whooping cranes to cheer on badger and wolf in “The Great Wisconsin Zoo-per Bowl.”  Meet at the Amphitheater or the Visitor Center in bad weather. 10 to 11 a.m.

    Red Trail Hike.   Hike to explore the beautiful 8.3-mile Red Trail in the last Spring into Fitness event.  Bring water and pack a lunch.  Trail is often very wet.  Meet at the Trailhead. 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (estimate).

    Garden Stepping Stones.  Make a beautiful personalized cement stepping stone for someone else special or for your own garden. You may bring your own durable items to place in your stone or use one of Bong’s. Pre-register and pre-pay; fee is $15. You will need to pick up your project the next day or at a later date. Meet at the Visitor Center. 1 to 2pm.

      • Thursday, May 8

    Knee-High Naturalist. Bring your 3 to 5 year old to this fun and involving nature program. This month see why you don’t look like your mother. Pre-register by calling (262) 878-5600. Meet at the Visitor Center. 10 to 11:30 a.m.

      • Saturday, May 10

      Kid’s Fishing Clinic. Kids, 16 and younger, bring an adult to learn the basics of fishing while trying to catch your own fish. All equipment supplied.  Meet at the Visitor Center.  9:30 to 11 a.m.

    Park Workday. Need a service project?  Want to help the environment and the park? Come help at our workday. Workdays are flexible; you may come for the ones you want and stay as long as you want. They are most suitable for ages 10 and up. Dress to be working outside. For more information or to sign up, call (262) 878-5607. Meet at the Visitor Center.  1 to 3 p.m.

      • Sunday, May 11

    Mother’s Day Wildflower Hike. Show Mom (or anyone special) a bouquet they will always remember.  Bring the camera to take pictures, not the flowers, home. Trail is rough and wet. Meet at the Visitor Center but be prepared to drive.  2 to 4 p.m.

      • Tuesday, May 13

    Adopt a Highway.  Join us to clean up the highway in front of the park. All equipment is provided. You must be at least 12 years old to participate. A great way to earn service hours. Meet at the Visitor Center.  5:30 to 7 p.m.

      • Saturday, May 17

      Bird Migration Hike. Experience the amazement of migration. Bring your binoculars and look and listen for newly arrived birds, especially warblers. Meet at the Vista Picnic Area.  7 to 9 a.m.

    • Leaf Bird Baths. Cast a beautiful cement birdbath from a leaf. Pre-register and pre-pay by calling (262) 878-5600. $15 fee; all supplies included.  Meet at the Visitor Center. You will have to pick up your project the next day or later. 1 to 2 p.m.
