Central, Wilmot track has best finish of the season

The end of the spring season is quickly approaching, and for the Wilmot boys and girls track teams, that means final tune ups before the real important part of the schedule.

And in the case of the Panthers, that meant putting together a solid effort at Friday’s Delavan-Darien Borg Invitational.

The Wilmot boys finished third with 110.5 points, while the girls were fifth with 71. Westosha Central won the boys’ title with 189 points, followed by Monroe with 118.5, while on the girls’ side, Lakeside Lutheran was first with 162 points and Central was second with 145.

Wilmot coach Norm Preo was pleased with efforts from both teams.

“The boys team had their best finish of the season,” he said. “They are getting better and better as the season progresses.

“The girls had some excellent individual efforts and relay performances.”

Albert Rogalski led the boys, as he won the long jump at 20-1. Other top efforts by the boys were turned in by Christian Rothmann, second in the 600 (1:32.51); Riley Potter, second in the high jump (5-8); and Stephen Squires, second in the pole vault (11-6).

Rogalski’s effort could be just the tip of the iceberg for him before the end of the year, Preo said.

“(He) has long jumped over 20 feet in the last two meets,” Preo said. “I believe he has a 21 footer still to come.”

The format for the meet played into Rothmann’s hands, and his strength, Preo said.

“If we had the 600-meters as a regular running event, Christian Rothmann would be our guy,” Preo said. “It is his idea distance for racing.”

On the girls’ side, Haylee Martin again led the way with two first-place finishes, as she won the long jump (17-1) and the triple jump (35-6). Martin’s effort in the long jump broke her own school record.

“She is excited for regionals next week,” Preo said.

The Panthers’ other win came from Rebecca Alter in the 200 with a time of 28.36.

“Rebecca Alter ran an excellent 200 meters,” Preo said. “She is great at accelerating through the turn.”

Both Wilmot squads competed at the Southern Lakes Conference Meet Tuesday at Westosha Central. The Panthers then will be idle until next Tuesday, May 27, when they participate in a WIAA Division 1 regional.

Now is the time for the athletes to hit their stride, Preo said.

“May is a hectic month for all sports, including track and field,” he said. “We are trying to stay healthy and no overdo our training before regionals. We don’t want any injuries, especially those notorious shin splints.”

Boys fourth at county meet

The Wilmot boys had 93 points, good for fourth place, while the girls were fifth with 68, at last week’s Kenosha County Meet at Central.

Central was first with 127 points, followed by Kenosha Bradford with 106, Indian Trails with 105, Wilmot and St. Joseph’s with 60. Rounding out the team scores were Kenosha Tremper with 47 points, Shoreland Lutheran with 17 and Kenosha Christian Life with two.

On the girls’ side, Central was first with 141 points, followed by Tremper with 104, Indian Trails with 79, Kenosha Bradford with 69, Wilmot, Shoreland Lutheran with 56, St. Joseph’s with 38 and Christian Life with two.

Rogalski was first in the high jump (5-10), while Squires won the pole vault (10-6) to lead the boys. Haylee Martin brought home three titles, as she was first in the 400 (1:03.95), the long jump (16-6 3/4) and the triple jump (35-6 1/4).

Finishing second were Rogalski in the long jump (20-3); Wyatt Heckel in the pole vault (10-0); the 800-meter relay (1:38.01); the 1,600-meter relay (3:41.52); Alter in the 400 (1:04.65); and the girls’ 1,600-meter relay (4:22.72).
