Fox Lake American Legion family to host chicken barbecue

By Gregory Harutunian/Correspondent

The Sons of the American Legion and the Fox Lake American Legion Family have cordially invited the entire community to attend its first gun raffle and barbeque, a “Chicken dinner with all the fixin’s,” Saturday, June 28, on the Legion Hall grounds, located at the intersection of Route 12 and N. Riverside Drive in Fox Lake.

Cost for the barbecue chicken dinner is $8. Music will be supplied by Second Chapter featuring Mitch Stephens. Whether people come by boat, car, or bike, the legion is always open to the public.

The dinner is being served from 5 to 8 p.m., with the raffle taking place at 8 p.m., with a chance to win one of 12 guns on the block. Additional raffles will be held throughout the evening, with all proceeds from the dinner and raffle being designated to benefit the legion’s baseball team and military veterans at the administration hospital in North Chicago.

“It’s really the first time that the Sons of the American Legion have attempted this type of event, and if it’s successful, it will become an event held annually,” said Robin Janisch, the Legion’s entertainment manager. “This is our post squadron, and was really pulled together over the last five years.

“They’ve done a lot of work in the community, such as the North Shore Fishing with the Veterans Administration twice a year, and they erected the four flagpoles which circle the American flag, near the channel.”

Each flag represents an adjunct within the Legion group: the American Legion, the Sons of the American Legion, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and the American Legion Riders.

The Fox Lake American Legion Post 703 was initially maintained a pro-active approach in leading the way to help military veterans through its programs and volunteer work in the community.

“We’ve become very active with the Veterans Administration hospital where the auxiliary will take abused veterans out to lunch, we go on-site there to play bingo and conduct the games, and there is a Santa’s workshop in the winter,” said Janisch. “Each post is locally-owned, and as such, funding comes from the local area and local events.

“During the Fourth of July parade in Fox Lake, the Legion has its own float, and members representing our Post 703, take part in the festivities. Janisch has been a post member for the last 14 years, and served as the post-president, before settling into her current job.

“We’re excited about this event, and looking forward to it. The cooking is always top-notch, and the grand prizes in the raffle also add to the fun.”

The list of the grand prize guns to be raffled are a Remington 700 SPS 30-06, a Remington R1 .45 1911, a Springfield XDS 3.3″ 45 ACP, a Glock 27 40 S and W, a Mossburg Just In Case 12-Gauge, a Chic Lady .38 Special revolver, aKahr CW9 9mm, a Smith and Wesson .22 Digital Camo, a Rock Island M1600 .22, a H & R 12-Gauge shotgun, a Rock Island M206 .38 special, and a Cobra ENT .380.

Included are two 8-hour pistol classes (toward certification for Illinois concealed carry gun laws. If you are joining in from Iowa, you can read more about the iowa concealed carry laws to discover how it will affect you, and four home safety classes. There are various aspects that can be looked at when we are looking at different types of safety measures (for example, some may want to include bullet proof windows in their houses, along with alarm systems and cameras as an extra security) in an area, depending on the locale and neighbourhood.

It must be noted that the winner must be 18 years of age, and is responsible for all taxes and any applicable licenses or necessary documentation. Those thinking of participating in the raffle to obtain their first firearm should consider all the facts first. A buying first pistol guide such as this one contains many of the questions to ask before going ahead.

The raffle licensing is under Fox Lake’s jurisdiction (R-1), and raffle tickets can be purchased on the day of the event. Vouchers will be given for the prizes that are won for Red dot firearms.
