Bong has programs to beat January deep freeze

The Richard Bong State Recreation Area, 26313 Burlington Road in Kansasville, announced the naturalist programs for January. The programs are as follows:

                  • Knee-High Naturalist

                  Thursday, Jan. 12 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

                  Bring your 3 to 5 year old to this fun and involving program – “Let’s Go Sledding!” Dress to be outside, and bring a sled if you have one. Pre-register by calling (262) 878-5600. Meet at Group Site A if there is snow, or the Visitor Center if there is no snow. The program will be held regardless of weather, but topic may change.

                  The Art of Falconry

                  Saturday, Jan. 14 from 9 to 10 a.m.

                  Join falconer Ed Foster and some friends to discover the details about one of the world’s oldest sports. Meet some birds and discover how their adaptations help them hunt. Meet at the Visitor Center.

                  Animal Tracks and Signs

                  Saturday, Jan. 21 from 10 to 11 a.m.

                  Join this program as you hike the trails in search of animal tracks, homes, and other signs. Discover what the park’s animals have been up to this winter. Dress to be outside. Meet at the Visitor Center.

                  Cross-country Ski Clinic

                  Saturday, Jan. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m.

                  Bring your skis and join instructor John Meyer to learn about waxing and other skiing tips. The diagonal stride technique will be taught and practiced. Pre-register by calling (262) 878-5600. Meet at Shelter #1. The ski clinic is weather dependent.

                  Wreaths for the Birds

                  Saturday, Jan. 28 from 11 a.m. to noon

                   Help the birds out this winter by creating an edible work of art. Using grapevine and birdseed you will make and attractive wreath for the birds. All materials supplied. Pre-register by calling (262) 878-5600 or stopping at the entrance station. Fee is $5 per wreath. An adult must accompany children. Meet at the Visitor Center.

                  Owl Prowl

                  Saturday, Jan. 28 from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

                   This annual event helps you discover why owls are the perfect night hunters. Dress for the weather because you will go outside in search of these predators. Meet at the Visitor Center, but be prepared to drive.
