Konwent named top player in SLC

By Dan Truttschel/Sports Correspondent

A year ago, Westosha Central’s Kayla Konwent mostly came out of nowhere before she established herself as one of the best players, not only in the Southern Lakes Conference, but in the state.

In 2014, she certainly wasn’t a secret to anybody.

Konwent shared this spring’s Player of the Year honors with Delavan-Darien sophomore pitcher Jenna Speth, according to recently released coaches’ voting re-sults.

Central, which fell 6-5 in an epic Division 1 state championship game to Kimberly two weeks ago, placed five girls on the three All-SLC teams, while rival Wilmot landed four.

The Falcons, who were 14-0 in the SLC, finished the spring at 27-4 overall.

Joining Konwent on the first team was pitcher Alyssa Hrncar, while second-team picks were Taylor Bergles and Haley Spoerl. Named honorable mention was Hailey Jester.

Representing Wilmot were Justine Schattner on the first team, Alyssa Horn and Lauren Orszula on the second team and Sawyer Wightman, honorable mention.

Central, which won its se-cond straight outright SLC title and third including a tie in 2012, was again led by the power-hitting Konwent.

For the year, the future University of Wisconsin-Madison softball player bat-ted .533 (49 for 92) with 12 home runs and 46 RBI.

Perhaps the more telling statistic was that Konwent, who also was a first-team, All-State selection again this spring, was the 15 walks she drew in 2014. In the state title contest with Kimberly, she was 5-for-6 at the plate with three intentional walks.

As a pitcher, Hrncar posted an 18-2 record in 2014, as she allowed 25 earned runs in 142-1/3 innings, good for an earned run average of 1.23.

Hrncar allowed just 35 walks and struck out 147. Opponents batted only .228 against her.

At the plate, Hrncar batted .383 for the season, as she collected 44 hits in 115 at bats.

Named to the second team were Bergles and Spoerl, who batted .434 (53 for 122) and .333 (30 for 90), respectively. Bergles also scored 45 runs and collected 10 doubles, five triples, two home runs, 14 sto-len bases and drove in 21.

Spoerl scored 20 runs, had four doubles, one triple, 12 RBI and stole seven bases

The Falcons’ last selection, Jester, batted .344 (33 for 96), with 21 runs scored, four dou-bles, 23 RBI and eight stolen bases.

Panthers land four

Schattner led Wilmot, which was 14-13 overall and 6-8 in the SLC, as she batted .333 (29 for 87), with 18 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples and 12 RBI. As a pitch-er, she was 7-6 with a 4.04 ERA, 43 strikeouts and 32 walks.

Named to the second team were Horn and Orszula, while Wightman was voted honorable mention.

Horn batted .310 (26 for 84), with 16 runs scored, two doubles, a triple, two homers and 13 RBI. Orszula finished the spring at .359 (28 for 78), with 14 runs scored, four doubles, a triple, a homer and 13 RBI.

In the pitcher’s circle, Or-szula was 7-7, with a 3.29 ERA, 80 strikeouts and 37 walks.

Wightman batted .323 (20 for 62), with 16 runs scored, five doubles, a home run and 12 RBI.
