SLC team looking for new coach

The time is now if you ever wanted to coach the Elkhorn Area High School baseball team.

Head coach Paul Manriquez recently stepped down after 14 years in charge.

“I wasn’t ready to be done, but it was a good time to do it,” Manriquez said.

Manriquez said his primary reason for stepping down is his children. Manriquez’s son is in seventh grade and his daughter is in sixth.

“I started looking at my kids, and wanted to work with them and get them some opportunities,” Manriquez said.

Manriquez is in his 15th year in the Elkhorn Area School District. He teaches sixth-grade science at Elkhorn Middle School.

Some of the high points of his tenure included trips to the Metrodome in Minneapolis and Miller Park. Elkhorn advanced to the WIAA sectionals tournament on different occasions in Manriquez’s time as manager, which is just a few games from the WIAA state baseball tournament.

“The high points for me were providing a lot of fun and excitement for the kids,” Manriquez said.

Manriquez is not through with baseball in Elkhorn. He is active with the Elkhorn Extreme club team, which he said is in its sixth or seventh season.

“As far as I’m concerned, with the group that’s in their freshman year and on down, it’s pretty good baseball, fourth through ninth grade,” Manriquez said. “I think the cupboard is full for whoever steps in.”

The position is currently posted on the Elkhorn Area School District’s web site. The position pays $2,345.00.

The Elks finished 8-15 overall and 2-12 and in last place in the Southern Lakes Conference this past season. Wilmot won the SLC with a 12-2 record.

The WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal game between the Elks and Beloit Memorial June 3 at Pohlman Field in Beloit lasted less than 90 minutes and marked the end of the season when Elkhorn lost 3-0.

The district is looking to also fill several other athletic coaching vacancies.

Two assistant coach positions are open for girls high school basketball. The high school girls golf team is looking for a golf aide.

The high school girls volleyball assistant freshman coach position is open, as is the high school girls assistant swimming coach position.

Two assistant girls volleyball coach positions are open at the middle school level. The district is also advertising for volunteer middle school assistant football coaches.

Those interested must apply through the Wisconsin Educator Career Access Network (WECAN). Contact Athletic Secretary Laura Humphrey at [email protected] or (262) 723-4920 for more information.
