It took better than half of the season, but the Southern Lakes Blue Devils posted their first win of the year July 26 in an Ironman Football League game at Westosha Central High School in Paddock Lake.

The Blue Devils defeated the Kenosha Cougars, 10-0. The win came in the Blue Devils’ final home game of the season.

“It makes everybody happy,” Blue Devils coach Tom Hawkins said.

The Blue Devils (1-5 IFL) used another strong showing from their defense and just enough offense to beat the Cougars (1-5 IFL).

The Blue Devils scored on a 30-yard field goal from Chris Horst early in the first quarter. Hawkins said the Blue Devils used a Cougars’ turnover inside the 30-yard line as the catalyst for the game’s opening score.

The defense got a score of its own later in the first quarter. The Blue Devils’ Travion Campbell returned an interception for a touchdown.

Hawkins said one of the most exciting plays of the game went for nothing.               Lashawn Goode scored an apparent 67-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter on a run Hawkins said was Walter Payton-like.

The play was called back when Kenosha was flagged for having too many men on the field. The Blue Devils were also called for holding on the play.

Hawkins said the defense played well against Kenosha, posting its first shutout of the season. Defensive back Jordan Brown intercepted the Cougars twice in the Blue Devils end zone.

The Blue Devils play the Rock River Raptors Aug. 2 on the road at Loves Park, Ill. Rock River (1-5) is in the IFL’s American Football Conference, same as the Blue Devils.

Rock River defeated the Blue Devils, 21-3, July 19 at Westosha Central. The Blue Devils’ defense forced five turnovers.

The winner of the rematch will be in good position to advance to the IFL playoffs.

Hawkins said the Blue Devils have advanced to the playoffs in each season of their existence. The team started playing in 2006.
